Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #Warblers.
It's about time for the Wilson's warblers to arrive.

The #BirdOfTheDay alt theme is #RareEncounters.
In December of 2024 a lone sandhill crane hung out in a nearby field for about a week. Waaaay out in the field. I'd only ever seen them once before, at the Salton Sea, in 1988 or '89.
Well, that depends, doesn't it? With enough pressure it will remain a liquid. That said, you've got your vapour, your steam, and, of course, your gas, innit?
Natural gas. Or propane, where applicable. We're in the sticks so we cook and heat with propane.
Thanks. I love its expression.
I just discovered that my photos of Melissa Auf der Maur and Courtney Love performing at Reading Festival in 1994 ran in The Times (and Sunday Times) last month. There's life in those archival photos yet.
For today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme, #Black&Red, here's Wattie the woodpecker (a ladder-backed, and apparently a fan of The Exploited).
Thanks!
For today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme, showing the intricacies of #Feathers, here's an unfledged red-tailed hawk. Its sibling a few yards away managed a few hops and a short glide, but this one was still earthbound.
Today's #scape photo is of one of AT&T's Long Lines microwave towers in the high Mojave desert. A network of 107, about 30 miles (line of sight) apart, transmitted phone and TV signals across the U.S. starting in 1951. Edwards AFB is out of frame to the left.

All aboard the wayback machine for a visit to Red Square just days before May Day, 1988. That's a banner of Marx, Engels and Lenin reflected on the front of Lenin's mausoleum. The TV cameras are ready for Gorbachev's review of the military parade.

Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #LargeBirdsInFlight (anything larger than a duck).
This is the closest I've been to a ferruginous hawk.
Thank you to Black Box Gallery (blackboxgallery.com) in Portland, Oregon, for including my photo in its Vision: Color Photography online annex exhibition.
The show opens today and runs through April 25, 2026.

It's still March here but the #BirdofTheDay theme will shortly be #snacks.
Here's a Northern mockingbird with a mulberry.
For today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme, #ruffledfeathers, a pair of very ruffled mourning doves.
Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #AdultsWithChicks.
A mockingbird pair had this one chick last summer. They moved on but it stayed, and recently found a mate.
Thanks!
Six of my photos have been selected for Artistic Animals 2026, an online exhibition hosted by KBM Art Gallery in Los Angeles (bit.ly/3PEbhsi) that runs through May 8.
Bonus: One of the photos fits today's #BirdOfTheDay theme, #Blue.

Here's a backlit mountain bluebird sitting in our apricot tree (which gave up fruiting years ago) for today's #BirdOfTheDay theme, #Blue.
Thanks!
The #BirdOfTheDay alt theme is #Eating.
This house finch was nomming on a seed. We have a feeder that we top up in the morning and evening.
Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #WingsOpenNotFlying.
Our starlings are busy showing off at the moment.
But it's a dry heat :-)
We're 20+ degrees above the average daily high this week (88F today - sheesh!). If you look carefully, most of my shots are around dawn and dusk. Midday can indeed be brutal.
This is a reminder to future me that the first black-chinned hummingbird arrived at our patch of the high Mojave desert today (3/26). We now have Anna's, Allen's, rufous and black-chinned here. Some BCHs usually hang around for a few months.

Thanks! It (I'm guessing he) was doing that thing they do, singing and flapping its wings. It's nesting season...
Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #speckled.
We have an abundance of starlings atm, with one or two pairs nesting on the property.
There's an old tree stump about 25 feet from our front door. A few days ago, a California ground squirrel moved in. So yesterday I sat and waited...

The #BirdOfTheDay theme for today is #OpenBeak, and this California thrasher has a song to sing about that.
