In the Credit River Valley along the Culham Trail, golden sunlight spills across the early morning giving our wonderful blue jay a stand out appearance resplendent in his dress blues adorned with white and black markings. He spies you standing there on the trail taking in the gold brown woodland scene. This common, large songbird is familiar to many people, with its perky crest; blue, white, and black plumage; and noisy calls. Blue Jays are known for their intelligence and complex social systems with tight family bonds. Their fondness for acorns is credited with helping spread oak trees after the last glacial period.

The image shows a marsh in early October. The blue sky is reflected in the still waters of the marsh, painting the water surface a deep azure. This is Heron Marsh at the Paul Smth’s College VIC in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. The VIC is a nature preserve that offers year-round access to nature, outdoor recreation and the arts. The 3,000-acre property has over 25 miles of trails for 3-season walking, strolling, and nature watching.
