To any and all who write on 19c America and want to improve the quality of their writing, a simple piece of advice: quote Frederick Douglass as much as you can and bask in the glow of his eloquence.
Yay to 1914 hoarders! This house was built by a Scottish immigrant carpenter and he knew we’d need those extras.
The fireplace itself needs an investment to make it useable again, plus the chimney needs lining, but knowing that the tiles don’t require some extraordinary act of historic preservation makes the rest of it a lot easier to contemplate. Yay!

Old house score! I started cleaning out a corner of the basement and came across a bin full of extra tiles that match the broken ones around our fireplace. I had been agonizing for two years about what to do about those broken tiles! Now I’m wondering if they are actually original to 1914 or not…

The foreground is dominated by the dark, heavily cratered lunar surface. In the distance, a crescent Earth, setting. Behind, the black of deep space.
I can't stop staring at these photos.
This is what Earthset looks like—our homeworld setting behind the Moon.
And compare the dark, cratered surface of the Moon to the blue oceans and swirling clouds on our own planet.
If there's a starker illustration of our lifegiving world, I've yet to see it.

The dichotomy of human experience.
A monumental scientific achievement and one man threatening to destroy everything all on the same screen.

This is the face of a lunar scientist who has just been told that the #Artemis II crew saw SEVERAL impact flashes (the flashes when meteors hit the lunar surface) in real time 😃 🌓💥

I was not prepared to see astronauts crying and hugging in space as they remember their friend and colleague’s late wife. 😭

As close as I was going to get to his little face— a black and yellow striped snake who is partly on a lichen-covered rock looking at me.
A little snake on the forest floor. He is black and yellow striped and has his front end on a rock
Signs of spring- a cute little snake sunning himself on a warm rock

Cover of Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë. The cover of my old paperback copy has a painting called The Governess, by Richard Redgrave. And a cover price of $4.95 😂
Love love love this book. I hadn’t reread it in probably twenty years, what a pleasure to go back to it again ❤️
Flyer for the UConn Powwow says it's today, from 12-5 in the Radcliffe Hicks Arena. Sponsored by NAISA, NACP. It has an Indigenous UConn logo, and photos of students and dancers at last year's powwow.
Beautiful maklaks by Lucy Jensen are leather with beaver trim, with large white and red beaded flowers on the top of the feet. The shoes rest on the back of blue seats in an empty arena. (It hasn't started)
If you are near Storrs CT, stop by the UConn powwow today! It's at the Radcliffe Hicks arena in Stores, CT from 12-5
(He’s not a monster, he’s a nice retired man who cares deeply about straight lines and neat edges. He probably is appalled by our shaggy yard.)
Of course if I ran out and complained I’d be the shrew next door who’s making trouble for him…
My next door neighbor trimming the forsythia hedge, about a week before it is set to gloriously bloom outside our dining room window. 😔 It’s his hedge and he does all the work, so he can do what he wants… but what kind of monster can’t wait two weeks before doing this?
Try it! I’ve been drinking chamomile tea before bed too but can’t imagine that’s making such a big difference.
Check for interactions of course- I’m being careful not to overlap with my thyroid medicine.
I’ve been sleeping really badly for a few years, as women my age tend to- waking up, often with nightmares, and couldn’t fall asleep again. Lately I very skeptically started taking magnesium glycinate, and I’m sleeping so well now! Makes no sense to me but I’m keeping at it…
