I know the world is on fire but please take a few minutes to look at the photos of the moon from yesterday. A gallery of some of the most astounding pictures ever taken. Here's one with Venus on the left

Yeah I have seen much, much worse reviewed movies in my time. And the reviewers who were being so hyperbolic about a children's movie, giving it zero stars or saying physical pain was preferable to the film, they just... seem like they are taking out other problems in life on this movie
-So much happens in the film so it's gonna take some time for me to sort through how I actually feel about everything lol.
It's cool to see the diversity of opinions! Despite some mega harsh reviews, it's not a universally "bad movie" by any means, and many people like it more than the first. My husband liked Galaxy better too and we've been talking about it. I feel like my thoughts on the movie are still evolving
If you want to know how this year is treating my brain, look no further than two days ago when I said on stream "I can't believe it's almost April already"
Yeah, I stream all the events :) I'm actually going on a trip in late May, but luckily this will be before I leave!
I'm less afraid of the layer itself and more afraid that it's probably gonna demand heavy use of the snake form, which is the one I like least to play as lol
He even has a theme song that exudes joy!

These slight modernizations of the long-absent animal buddies have been perfect every time!! Look at him!!! Probably my favorite event statue since the Chunky one. β₯οΈ π π
It evolves from a bug with two mushrooms on its back, to a bug who is essentially zombified and being piloted by a large mushroom. The mushroom is the real Pokemon in a sense.
I always found being overtaken or controlled by a plant/fungus to be one of my favorite horrifying tropes.

I think one of the things about bluesky is that for a lot of its users, it represents a kind of retirement from social media. Like Iβm tired and I want to get out of the game
LOL
But 4real happy Easter to all who celebrate π π₯
My king, long entombed, crowned in thorns, risen again. I have visited his glorious hole β’οΈ in the Forbidden Layer and found it empty.
And about the other one, my friends who didn't know or remember Lumalee from the first movie were freaked out by the "police brutality Luma", they were just like WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT ABOUT
Yeah tbh I feel silly gassing up the "themes" of the first movie but I do feel like there was at least something there! There was some cohesion to it and ideas that came up repeatedly. That qualifies as a theme, technically
I would say that it is indeed a payoff to a setup. Just not a very good one. Even if these movies existed completely on their own.
In the first movie Peach was thrilled to find Mario because he's another human like her. Now this movie establishes Peach as an extra special magical human
The filtering DOES work like this: some songs are set to only play on minigames/races, others on fights/bosses, exteriors, or interiors.
I'm not sure if the intention is to do something with the mood filtering someday; for now it's just more metadata
Yes, although iirc the mood filtering doesn't do anything as of yet? It's more for people's own knowledge of what to expect. When you submit a song you can choose "happy" "gloomy" etc but the randomizer doesn't try to fit gloomy songs in Gloomy Galleon or anything like that.

So to answer my own question. This movie did indeed increase my appreciation for the original by making me appreciate some things it got right. Galaxy feels like it had not even the thinnest of themes besides an echo of the first's on parent/child and sibling relationships, but done worse
Or they could have just left it some "cosmic mystery", but these movies don't seem interested in making kids really think or ponder or wonder, outside of the initial Peach mystery, now solved. Would have rather they taken this opportunity to explain where Jr came from instead lol
Also, about THAT twist... tbh I honestly can't blame them for trying to explain some things about these characters that movie viewers would inevitably come to question. But I dunno, they could have thought of something else?? Insane thing to drop 20 years after the character's introduction-
this fantastic world where anything is possible, anyone can be a hero if they develop skill and creativity.
I guess Galaxy could have ostensibly been about the boundless wonder (no pun intended) of this fantasy universe, but because it loses that sense of contrast, everything feels samey
The first movie was essentially better than I expected, and even where it differed from the games, I (mostly) enjoyed its interpretations. I also really appreciated that it firmly re-established the bros as being from Our World. In this way it was able to really showcase what Mario is all about IMO,
Yet it showed that even in a fantastic setting people would face the same problems, like a talking gorilla trying to live up to his dad's expectations just the same as a plumber from Brooklyn.
Galaxy goes 1000 fun places but none of them seem to really matter or compare/contrast meaningfully
The first movie feels more "grounded" (appropriately). I enjoyed the dichotomies in it- between Brooklyn/"the real world" and the fantastic Mushroom Kingdom, the MK vs Bowser's realm or that of the Kongs etc. I thought the contrast in each of these places and among their characters felt palpable-
So now that I've slept on it.
I think both movies were roughly equal in terms of quality. They were both fast-paced and shallow and it's hard for me to call one "better." Galaxy was probably more impressive in terms of animation/visuals.
...But I totally like the first movie better! Here's why-
