The civilization that would die if such threats were carried out is our own.

A promotional flyer for a seminar hosted by NSF and NCAR. It features a satellite in space. The text reads: "Keeping space safe: Understanding the impacts of space weather on satellite orbits." The event is scheduled for Wednesday, March 11, 2026, from 7:00 to 8:30 PM MT at the NSF NCAR Mesa Laboratory, Boulder, CO. A QR code and headshot of the speaker, Nick Pedatella, are included.
To prevent collisions of satellites and other "space junk," we need to predict the weather in space, just like we predict the weather on Earth. Join the NSF NCAR Explorer Series (virtually or in-person) to learn more about how researchers do that: https://edec.ucar.edu/events/space-debris
A graphic displays the text "three yeas after I.M. Pei was chosen as architect, ground is officially broken at the Mesa Lab site."
In 1964 under the shadow of the Flatirons, ground was broken on Table Mesa for the Mesa Lab site! The NSF NCAR Archives meticulously restored and housed the video reel of the groundbreaking silent film, which can be viewed on YouTube!

3:30 PM WINDSTORM UPDATE: Winds still very strong in/near the terrain, but eastward push of strong winds didn't happen. Winds should be retreating west/uphill over the next 1-3 hours. Fire danger remains elevated through 6PM.

The outpouring of scientists sharing stories about their time at NCAR or collaborations with researchers there really tells you all you need to know about how central an institution to climate and weather research it is. It feels like every scientist I know (and hundreds I don’t!) have a connection
Unbelievable. This would be a terrible blow to American science, writ large. It would decimate not only climate research, but also the kind of weather, wildfire, and disaster research that has underpinned half a century of progress in prediction, early warning, and increased resilience.
A deeply dangerous — and blatantly retaliatory action against Colorado — by the Trump administration.
NCAR is one of the most renowned scientific facilities in the WORLD — where scientists perform cutting-edge research everyday.
We will fight this reckless directive with every legal tool we have.
Have you heard? The Geoscience Data Exchange platform is running and ready for community use! Designed to accelerate discovery and collaboration, GDEX ensures that scientific data are accessible and preserved for the research community, increasing discoverability and enabling collaboration.
And in that pause between pitch and contact - longer than logic, shorter than hope - we remembered why baseball existed long before we judged a sport's value by viral moments and betting apps. It is the romance of failure. The mortal beauty of trying and missing seven times out of 10 and still being considered great. It is the only sport where patience is a weapon, and panic the surest death. You cannot simply run out the clock in baseball; you must face it, pitch by terrifying pitch, until it finally releases you.
Did not expect one of the best paragraphs I’d read about baseball would come from an Irish newspaper

Prince releases his “1999” LP 43 years ago today.
Of the hit single, he said: “We were sitting around watching a [TV] special about the year 1999. .. Everyone I knew — people I thought were optimistic — were actually dreading those days. .. So I just wanted to write something that gave hope.” 🎸

trump war
To the extent cultural literacy means anything anymore, Col. Kurtz attacked and destroyed a village in large part because he wanted to surf its beach, reveled in its destruction, took casualties and killed a bunch of civilians in the process. Also, Trump could have served in Vietnam but didn't.
