A Steller’s jay stands on the rim of a dark blue backyard birdbath, shown in side profile against a soft green blurred background. Its black head, crest, and chest contrast with the rich deep blue feathers on its wings, body, and long tail. The bird’s beak points slightly upward, and its eye gives it an alert, watchful expression, as if it has paused to study the scene before taking a drink. The photo feels playful and observant, with a quiet sense of personality in the jay’s pose.

A telephoto view of Mount Rainier during blue hour, covered in snow and rising above dark forested foothills. The sky is a deep blue, and a very faint, thin cloud band hovers horizontally above the summit, only subtly visible against the sky. The lower slopes are darker with layered ridges and evergreen forest, while the mountain itself is softly lit and detailed with snowfields, gullies, and broad glacier-covered faces. The photo feels quiet, cold, and a little surprising once you notice the delicate cloud above the peak.

Lenticular over Mount Rainier.

This was a 30 second blue hour exposure. I could not actually see that faint cloud band with my eyes at the time, but the long exposure picked it up above the summit.

A tall white waterfall drops through a narrow opening in dense evergreen forest. Dark green conifers fill nearly the entire frame, with branches and foliage overlapping the view so the falls appear partially hidden deep in the trees. Sunlight catches parts of the forest canopy and some of the rock near the top of the cascade, while the water stands out brightly against the darker shaded surroundings. The photo feels secluded, lush, and quietly powerful.

Lower falls at Wallace Falls State Park, Washington.

I went for a hike here and was struck by how the trail keeps you close to the Wallace River before opening to this view through the trees. It is one of those places that feels deep, green, and full of motion.

A close view of cherry blossom trees in full bloom, with dense clusters of soft pale pink flowers filling most of the frame. Dark branches and tree trunks weave through the blossoms, adding contrast and structure to the light floral canopy. The background is mostly hidden by the mass of blooms, giving the image a layered and immersive spring feel. The photo feels gentle, quiet, and fleeting.

Cherry Blossoms in Spring.

For a few days each year, everything feels softer under these blossoms. I always notice how quickly this kind of beauty appears and disappears. That may be part of why it feels so special.

A close view of Mount Index fills the frame, showing steep jagged rock faces broken by narrow snow-filled gullies and broader white snowfields along the upper ridge. Warm low-angle light catches parts of the summit and highlights the texture of the rock, while much of the lower mountain remains in cool shadow. A deep clear blue sky forms a simple backdrop above the peak, and the top of a dark evergreen tree rises into the bottom center of the image. The photo feels rugged, still, and quietly powerful.

One thing about the Pacific Northwest mountains.

You can stand in the same place a hundred times.
And the mountain will never look the same twice.

Light and weather rewrite the scene every day.

North side of Mount Index.

What stood out to me here was the contrast between the dark green forest below and the snow-covered ridges above. I like how that separation gives the mountain so much presence.

I got a comment that this photo looks like a face looking upward. Do you see it too?

The forehead and eye on the right, the nose is in the center, and the mouth and neck are on the left.

Once you see it, you cannot unsee it. 😀

Mount Index rises under a clear blue sky, with dark rock walls and snow-covered slopes catching warm sunset light near the summit. Most of the mountain is in cool shadow, which makes the lit snow stand out more strongly. The scene feels crisp, quiet, and wintry.

Mount Index at sunset.

What caught my eye was the sunlight hitting the snow on the upper ridge. On a clear evening, it makes the whole mountain really stand out. View full screen to see the texture and detail of the ridge.

Some mornings in the PNW never really open up all at once. The clouds just lift enough to reveal a ridge or a little more depth in the forest.

That slow reveal is what pulled me into this scene. It felt like one of those quiet moments where the light and fog worked together in the trees.

A group of evergreen trees stands on a mountain slope, heavily coated in white frost. Some trees are fully covered while others show dark green branches beneath the ice. A light layer of mist hangs through the forest, softening the background and giving the scene a cold, wintry atmosphere. The sky above is pale blue and clear. The photo feels quiet, cold, and calm.

Frosty trees in the morning light.

I stopped for this view this past weekend because the frost gave each evergreen so much texture. It was one of those winter details that felt too good to pass by.

What catches your eye first, the frost or the shape of the trees?

A snow-covered mountain slope rises behind a dense line of dark evergreen trees at Crystal Mountain Resort in Washington. On the left side of the frame, a large foreground tree is coated with frost and ice, adding texture and depth. The upper ridge of Grubstake Point is partially softened by thin cloud, while patches of blue sky open on the right. Ski tracks are faintly visible across the broad white face, and scattered evergreens climb the slope toward the ridge. The photo feels cold, quiet, and still.

A snow-covered mountain ridge rises against a blue sky with a few soft clouds. Dark evergreen trees line the crest and scatter down the steeper right side of the slope. Long shadows stretch diagonally across the snow, while rocky outcrops and ski tracks add texture to the face of the mountain. A chairlift structure sits near the summit. Mount Rainier is shown covered in bright white snow beneath a deep blue sky, with a soft layer of cloud or fog drifting across the lower part of the mountain. Dark evergreen branches filled with many tan pine cones frame the scene on both sides and across the bottom, creating a natural window around the peak. The mountain stands out sharply in the center while the foreground trees remain darker and more textured. The photo feels calm, crisp, and quietly majestic.

I love how the mountain seemed to rise out of the low clouds while the fir branches and pinecones framed the scene. It felt like a classic Pacific Northwest view to me.

A narrow wet paved path runs through bright green grass in a park under soft afternoon light. Clear shallow water fills the frame, revealing a bed of rounded stones in gold, gray, tan, and rust tones beneath the surface. Pieces of driftwood and small branches are scattered among the rocks, especially along the right side where darker reflective water begins. Gentle ripples move across the upper half of the image near a band of reeds, and a pale fallen log stretches horizontally along the far bank in front of dense green shrubs. The photo feels quiet, observant, and attentive to small details that might otherwise be missed.

Every photograph quietly answers one question.

Why did this moment matter?

The camera records the scene.
But the photographer decides what was worth noticing.

What makes a moment matter enough to photograph?

Winter light in the forest.

I stopped for this because the moss lit up just enough to separate these trees from the darker evergreens behind them. The little bits of snow helped hold that winter feeling.

A clear view across Lake Wenatchee shows still water reflecting forested slopes and rugged mountain ridges in warm evening light. In the foreground, the shallow shoreline is so transparent that rounded stones beneath the water are clearly visible, creating a textured path into the calm lake. Golden light touches the hillside on the left and the upper face of the mountain on the right, while cooler shadows settle along the distant trees and lower ridges. The pale, cloudless sky and glassy reflection give the whole scene a simple, quiet balance. The photo feels calm, reflective, and quietly absorbing, like a moment that made me stop and really look.

In the simplest sense, photography is just light.
Light bouncing off objects into a lens.

But anyone who spends time with a camera knows that’s not the whole story.

A photograph is really about what made you stop and look.

One thing I love about photography is the community around it.

Many photographers work alone in the field.
Quiet mountains. Empty beaches. Silent forests.

But together on Blue Sky we form a worldwide group of storytellers.

A young evergreen sapling stands in the foreground of a dense Pacific Northwest forest. Its delicate horizontal branches spread outward in layered tiers, each covered with fine green needles and small droplets of moisture. Behind it, tall tree trunks rise vertically and fade into a soft green blur, creating depth and separation. The forest floor and surrounding foliage are deep shades of green, suggesting damp woodland conditions after rain. The small tree appears bright and fresh against the darker background, drawing the eye to its structure and symmetry. The scene feels quiet, calm, and reflective, like a moment of stillness deep in the forest.
