Twenty years in limbo means never truly knowing you're safety, never really being able to settle and become a full part of a community.

No one benefits when we lock refugees and other migrants out of belonging.

WRITE TO YOUR MP ACTION - don’t leave refugees in limbo, back EDM 2908 - Fight for Asylum Rights

Imagine fleeing war, torture and persecution and finally being given sanctuary - and then learning it only lasts 30 months.

Temporary protection isn't real protection. Tell your MP to sign the motion opposing this cruel and counterproductive change:

Your regular reminder that every person waiting for any asylum decision should have the right to work.

Banning people from work makes skills stagnate, leaves people stuck in poverty, and makes it so much harder for people to rebuild their lives.

UK to pay France extra £16m in stopgap deal to patrol Channel beaches Two-month arrangement aimed at preventing small-boat crossings comes as existing deal expires

£16m wasted - and who knows how many more children traumatised by violent police action, how many more people killed in crossings made more deadly by hostile border enforcement.

Is this really what we want our money spent on?

UK to pay France extra £16m in stopgap deal to patrol Channel beaches Two-month arrangement aimed at preventing small-boat crossings comes as existing deal expires

And we know that the £16m our Government has just spent on continuing the failed project of border violence will do nothing to stop more tragedies like this.
More police hostility at the border means more dangerous departures and smaller, more crowded boats.
Only safe routes can stop the deaths.

Two more people died in our Channel today.
We don't know what they were fleeing. We don't know what their hopes or dreams were.
We don't even know their names.
We do know they deserved better. We know safe routes could have saved them.

Two dead and one missing after trying to cross Channel to UK First fatal incident this year occurred hours after £16.2m ‘stop the boats’ deal agreed between Britain and France

These deaths are tragic, and completely avoidable.

Our thoughts are with their loved ones, and everyone who was on the boat.

Until meaningful safe routes are established, lives will continue to be put at risk.

Safe routes, NOW.

Forcing refugees to reapply for protection every 30 months will make it impossible for people to rebuild their lives.

Hundreds of religious leaders issue warning over 'chilling' immigration change In a letter to Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, 720 faith leaders warned that restrictions on family reunion will push desperate people towards the smuggling gangs the Government is trying to dismantle

"There is nothing fair or compassionate about keeping families divided."
Well done to faith leaders for speaking out against this attack on family life. Family reunion must be restored, so children aren't left trapped in danger and separated from their families.

tag your MP today in this to ask them to join us calling for proposals to end refugee status to be put to parliament so we can do our job and scrutinise the impact this could have on those already here in our country. This motion if debated could stop these proposals.

Doctors waiting on asylum decisions can work in NHS as Home Office lifts ban Rule change follows high court challenge brought by two doctors prevented from working in specialist fields

Great news that asylum seeking doctors can now work, but legal action shouldn't have been needed to force the government into this minor concession.
Asylum seekers should be allowed to work.

If you agree, use our easy letter writing tool to tell your MP to come to our upcoming event in Parliament to hear the evidence for lifting the ban - as well as to stand against absurd and cruel new rules giving refugees just 30 months of protection:

Anyone who has waited more than six months for an asylum decision should be able to seek work - in any job they have the skills for.

It would save money, boost our economy by as much as £1.6bn, and cut asylum system costs while ensuring support is there for those who need it.

The reality remains that the majority of people seeking asylum in the UK remain banned from working. The ability to work and rebuild your life with independence and dignity shouldn’t be an exception granted to a few people - it should be the rule.

It’s always good to see more occupations open to people in the asylum system, and to know talented professionals will have more opportunity to share their skills.

But the high skills threshold expected could prevent many people from finding work while they await a decision.

Previous rules hugely limited the number of roles open to those people seeking asylum with permission to work, and recently faced a legal challenge on behalf of two asylum-seeking doctors who’d been denied the opportunity to use their specialist skills.

It means some skilled professionals including doctors, nurses, solicitors, architects and engineers seeking asylum will be able to seek work in the UK.

Under new rules, people given permission to work after waiting 12 months for an asylum decision will be able to seek jobs on the Appendix Skilled Occupations list which are categorised by the Government as degree-level roles (RQF 6 or higher).

A woman holds a cardboard sign reading "let people work"

What's happening with working rights?

A recent change to migration rules means, from today, skilled professionals seeking asylum have a greater chance to work in the UK - but the fight for real, viable working rights for everyone seeking safety goes on.

‘The UK is saying the same thing as the Taliban’: the women banned from studying in Britain The Home Office has blocked new study visas for applicants from Afghanistan, Sudan, Myanmar and Cameroon. It means many women will miss out on life-changing opportunities – as five female academics…

Our Government should be ashamed to be doing the work of the Taliban for them, refusing talented women the chance to be educated in safety.
