Beautiful

Blue Jays kicking up their feet and some snow at the stump.

Horizontal landscape/pondscape in winter. In the foreground are deep burgundy colored dried weeds and blackberry canes; midground carries a vaguely reflective surface of pond water; the background is the foggy silhouette of cedar (juniper) trees and deciduous trees bare of leaves, save for one oak with leaves that cling throughout the winter the season–– a marcescent tree. The feeling of the photograph is of a silent, calm, and damp day.

I’m somewhat nervous sharing this painting as I created it just after my mother passed away in July this year.

Seeing a creature so close to extinction in such raw beauty is rare. This white rhino, photographed in Sabi Sands during my 2022 BootCamp Safari, is one of my favourite moments. I waited for it to step into the light, and patience paid off—creating this powerful monochrome shot.
