I just registered for the GRC Unifying Ecology Across Scales meeting. This year's theme is "Connecting Unifying Ideas with Bold Data Streams to Predict Change in Natural Systems" and the lineup looks amazing.
As always, it has been a joy to work with this @gleonetwork.bsky.social team. Very excited to have this paper published, and eager to hear any thoughts or responses.
A graph illustrating the prevalence of the word "season" in lake-related literature from 1980–2024. Total prevalence increased from just under 5% of papers in 1980 to over 7% in 2024.
Discrete seasons are increasingly common in lake-related literature. This figure shows the percentage of all lake papers that include the word "season" in their title or abstract, which has increased from 1980–present.
Sunburst plot illustrating the most common words that precede "season" in the titles and abstracts of lake-related papers. Hydrologic terms (e.g., dry, wet, rainy) are the most prevalent category, followed by growth/growing seasons, spawning/breeding seasons, and ice-related seasons (melt, open-water, ice-free)
Lake-related papers reference a huge diversity of seasons. We extracted the word before "season" from titles and abstracts of 45,200 papers. Hydrologic seasons (drainy/dry) were the most prevalent, followed by seasons related to flora/fauna and ice.
A figure showing annual environmental data from Mohonk Lake, Lake Tanganyika, and West Lake Bonney. Each lake is shown as a set of concentric rings, with stratification data in the outermost ring, daylength in the middle ring, and astronomical seasons (spring/summer/autumn/winter) in the innermost circle. Mohonk exhibits ice cover and thermal mixing, while the other two lakes do not. West Lake Bonney exhibits the strongest gradient of day length across the year
Patterns of seasonality vary over space and time. Discrete seasons simplify this complexity, which has implications for research and communications ("all seasons are wrong but some are useful")
We drew from lots of sources: global data synthesis, abstracts of >45,000 papers, and literature review, including a deep dive into the ways that seasons have been socially/culturally defined around the world. Ultimately, we landed on five recommendations.

Question for #science bluesky!
Does anyone have experience with Earth System Science Data's living data publication process?
www.earth-system-science-data.net/living_data_...
Writing the 2nd edition of my data science book has reminded me of this: Students don't struggle with advanced topics. They struggle with fundamentals explained too abstractly. Teaching requires empathy, not just expertise.
