Exactly. It's not easy, but... the system allows me to keep going when I lack motivation. Creating publicly is the way to go, but without oversharing ;)

Streaks are a double-edged tool. Theybmotivate through continuity,
but also create pressure and fear of failure ;)
Iām leaning more towards flexible consistency
where the goal is to adapt the effort, not maintain a perfect streak :)
Really appreciate that!
Yeah, the struggle is real, especially when you're doing this after a full-time job.
Thatās exactly why Iām focusing on the habit side of it, not just motivation. Trying to build something that actually helps people stay in the game long enough to finish what they start š
100% this.
Job = energy problem
No job = money problem
Different battles, same war: not burning out before you finish something.
Exactly! I think burnout is just one side of the problem; the other is runway. Curious: what do you think shortens the runway the most for solo creators today? :)
thank you! :)
Two books titled Shell Method displayed side by side - a red book with a shell illustration (mental framework for solo game development) and a green book with a starfish illustration (Creatorās Mental Journal), marked as āComing Soon.ā
Nobody tells you this:
Solo devs donāt fail because of lack of skill.
They fail because they can't survive long enough.
Burnout>talent.
Iām building a Creator's Mental Journal to fix that.
Shell Method is already out- Journal coming very soon.

Photo of an open book showing a section about the āmood trap mechanism,ā explaining how most creators rely on inspiration ā motivation ā action, while the alternative model presented is action ā result ā mood/motivation.
Most people wait for: inspirationāmotivationāaction
But it often works the other way: actionāresultāmotivation
You donāt need the mood. You need one small move.
Action builds results.
Results build agency.
Agency builds motivation.
Move first - the motivation follows.

I'm starting production on a new prototype for Saghala: Heroes of the Last World! Today I've already made some movement (WASD) and interacted with the environment (mouse). The graphics are still a bit rough, but you can slowly feel the atmosphere :) #gamedev #indiedev #solodev

Today "Shell Method" officially launched! Itās out in the world š„³
I shipped something Iād been dreaming about for years. Written after hours, between work and life.
No matter what happens next - I delivered.
And that feeling is priceless.

Open book (PL version) showing a chapter about celebrating milestones in the Shell Method, placed on a desk with a keyboard in the background.
I used to skip milestone celebrations.
Sprint ā next ā repeat.
No closure = no progress feeling.
Now I close every sprint intentionally.
Small finish lines keep solo projects alive.
Remember this :)
Shell Method - soon.

Energy is low, focus comes and goes - but my method still works. Even on bad days, I do one small, simple thing and let it be enough.
Progress doesnāt stop. It just changes pace.

My method works perfect! Yesterday I stopped, sat down for 15 minutes, did a few simple things (the project is moving forward), then rested. This morning I woke up with real energy and Iām working at double intensity - only inside my high-energy windowsš #indiedev #gamedev #solodev #buildinpublic
A close-up of a relaxed white dog lying on the floor with its head resting sideways, eyes half-closed, peacefully resting indoors.
Today is one of those days when everything feels heavy.
I showed up for 15 minutes, did a few simple things to keep momentum alive.
Now I rest.
This isnāt weakness - itās strength.
btw. My pup is resting too š¾

Abstract illustration showing a battery or energy bar connected to a creative project, symbolizing energy management in long-term creative work.
Most creative burnout doesnāt come from working too much.
It comes from working against your energy.
Energy isnāt motivation.
Itās the fuel that decides whatās possible today.
Manage energy first. Productivity follows.

Abstract illustration symbolizing mental friction, burnout, and long-term struggle of a solo game developer.
For years I thought the problem was motivation.
Or discipline. Now I know itās the mental friction that builds up over time. And nobody teaches us how to deal with it.
Does this resonate with you?

This is what 1,5 years of solo development looks like. 18 months of looking at my hand-drawn space station and creating a game :) For me it's amazing how you can make a game starting from one sheet of paper.
