Rising Interest Rates Was An Unforced Error.
via @jonathanjmiller.bsky.social

• Tariffs are inflationary
• Placing political pressure on the Fed to slash interest rates is inflationary.
• Wars and random bombing of countries are inflationary

I am aghast listening to people on TV discuss the NFP report of 178k as "Blowout numbers."

This is an okay number, not as bad as some recent data points, not as good as others.

Call it the soft prejudice of low expectations...

Have Trump's tariffs worked? This is where things stand a year after 'Liberation Day' It has been a year since President Trump announced double-digit tariffs on imports from around the world. So far, those levies have not produced the economic boom the president promised.

1-year Anniversary of Liberation Day:

-US foreign direct investment is lower
-US factories employ 89,000 fewer people
-US goods trade deficit is UP 2%
-Treasury collected billions but must return it
-Inflation elevated.
-Every court + SCOTUS found them unconstitutional

China Will Never Beat Taiwan, Here’s Why
China Will Never Beat Taiwan, Here’s Why YouTube video by Maxinomics

Welcome to the story of the Silicon Shield.

Fascinating video on how Taiwan turned its biggest geographical weaknesses into a global monopoly that no one else has been able to copy. On an island with earthquakes, no freshwater and a hostile superpower 100 miles away?

Saba’s current alternative tender proposal to EWIT shareholders involves the value of SpaceX being capped at last December’s valuation of $800bn, rather than the expected value of $1.75tn being placed on its coming IPO.

Tweet by John Palmer @johnpalmer: This is incredibly annoying. Getting several of these per day from Coinbase. I don't understand pushing this on users who trust coinbase to hold their stablecoin and crypto balances. This is essentially encouraging me to gamble. What does that say about the internal philosophy around money management? Can I trust the yield sources on USDC interest, can I trust internal risk management, etc. I really just don't get it, I love Coinbase and hold the stock too but this just feels like there are no consistent brand values underlying the strategy.

Fun to see how the erroneous predictions line up with how the crypto super PACs were spending.

I've spoken before about how Polymarket — despite its PR claims about being more accurate than polls — is often a better signal of what crypto holders WANT to have happen.

The S&P 500 has been down 4 weeks in a row, and six of the last 12 weeks.

As of Friday, we were off ~6.8% from recent highs, with the Nasdaq off ~8.2%.

This looks less a case of TACO, and more of a case of an oversold market wildly overdue for a bounce...

We are in the midst of a hot war in Middle East, Oil prices kiss $120, cooling (pre-war) labor market, + the odds of a recession ticking up from modest levels.

And despite all of this geopolitical economic chaos, Silver and Gold are both crashing.

I remain unconvinced that the MEDIAN alternative fund is worth the fees, illiquidity, and complexity.

Unless you can get into a top-decile (maybe even top-quartile) fund, it is simply not worth the headaches.
