Calling all Astro.js developers. My rewilding charity @protect.earth has been trying to replace a horrible Squarespace site with an API powered data centric website. Need a few volunteers to get this over the line. Grab an issue if you can! 🙏🏼 github.com/protect-eart...

This charity has only ever hit the levels of national success on such a shoestring budget from amazing donations from my old tech friends guilty about things like working on overthrowing democracy at Facebook.

Good thread about curlews on my home turf in the north east of Wales.

The only way forward is to have more open and honest dialogue with everyone included.

Focus needs to be on finding solutions and not just the usual finding fault.

Great thread - this diversity of landuse is the big change and it’s in only a few decades, as you say it is much more homogeneous now and some of those fields will be cut for early silage.

Easter Rising Centenary - BBC Newsnight
Easter Rising Centenary - BBC Newsnight YouTube video by BBC Politics

110th anniversary of the Easter Rising. Ten years ago made this piece for Newsnight (one of my first!) for the 100th. Hard to believe just how much has been packed into Anglo-Irish relations, how much has changed, even since then. Much for the worse. youtu.be/RmaIOG9-BBk?...

I’d really like BlueSky to work better - I find the “discover” algorithm delivers much less interesting results than say Linked In or Insta - maybe I’ve got things set up differently on bluesky but it feels less intuitive than the other platforms

Last fun fact, you could make around 500m3 wood fiber insulation with this.

Ok, one more: You could leave this wood in nature to provide habitats and C storage.

That’s the most important one - longer term carbon storage and substituting for (potentially) non bio based materials
Oh and less air pollution

“Global patterns of commodity-driven deforestation and associated carbon emissions.”

Interesting analysis of data sets and research - 2 key points
* Difference between tree cover loss vs deforestation
* Local context is v important when making global comparisons

Forest Service Will Close Research Stations That Study Wildfire Risk Scientists say their work on fires and climate change could be lost as the agency moves its headquarters to Utah from Washington and shuts 57 research stations.

The U.S. Forest Service is closing 57 of its 77 research facilities in 31 states under a reorganization plan announced this week, threatening science that looked at how wildfires, drought, pests and global warming are putting pressure on forests.

Trump administration orders dismantling of the U.S. Forest Service Late Tuesday afternoon, with the subtlety of a wrecking ball and the morality of a foreclosure notice, the Trump administration announced the most devastating attack on the U.S. Forest Service in the ...

“They’re destroying more than fifty research facilities across thirty-one states, labs that house decades of irreplaceable long-term science…And they’re replacing all of it — the offices, the scientists, the institutional knowledge, the professional independence — with fifteen political appointees”

Timber in construction roadmap 2025

Barely a year since the Government launched the "Timber in Construction roadmap" ... www.gov.uk/government/p...

This is totally bonkers proposal, it goes in the exact opposite direction to where we need to go 🤦

Restricting timber in construction further would mean we burn through the remaining carbon emissions much quicker.

It needs a robust rebuttal during consultation.

This is a shocking move and makes the UK an outlier with the most restrictive policy on timber construction in the world

In the midst of a climate crisis, this removes one of the best tools in the box for climate mitigation in the built environment - Timber, a low-emission, carbon-storing material
