Since 1973, Irish agriculture has received net transfers from the EU of close to €40 BILLION, dragging the entire sector out of poverty.
Doubly sickening to see a recipient of this taxpayer largesse lecture anyone on “looking after our own people first”

Photo of Lelia Doolan, a 91 year old fit-looking white Irish woman wearing a hiviz jacket standing with her hands on her hips on the road somewhere between Roscrea and Mountrath.
A route map showing the starting points for each day of Lelia's peace march. Between March 31 and April 15, Lelia will have covered 222.6 kilometres. Today, Wednesday 8th, she is walking from Mountrath to Portlaoise and is past the halfway point.
Ireland is complicit in genocide as long as the US military uses Shannon airport.
91yo Lelia Doolan - veteran peace activist, film-maker and firebrand - is leading a 16-day march from Shannon to Leinster House. You can join her at any point for any distance.

The assembly of tractors is causing the sort of chaos & damage to businesses in the city centre that business groups said was only possible with the introduction of bicycle lanes.
There is a clear political attempt (looking at no Peadar Toibín's in particular..) to use this energy crisis to attack the very solutions we need: making homes warmer, public transport more accessible and agriculture more sustainable.
We deserve real solutions - not opportunistic scapegoating.
It would appear that some "legitimate concerns" are considered more legitimate than others ....
I'm not sure if the incredible response is a testament to how much Irish people love the environment, or how much we fucking hate Jim O' Callaghan, but I'll take it either way.
#spéirgorm If you want a bit of a pick-me-up, this episode of the Echo Chamber is just the trick. It's a testament to everyone fighting back against our government. It reminds you that people are good. It shows that government spin isnt working. Great stuff tortoiseshack.ie/access-to-ju...
Food security is often used as a justification for funneling more public € into a farming model that is not designed to deliver it. Ireland does need greater food sovereignty & resilience, that begins with revitalising our horticulture & tillage sectors while reducing dependence on imports & exports
Putting aside Sam Altman just continuing to emit huge lies constantly, this is an amazing example of what I mean when I talk about how GenAI is replacing *extremely low energy* digital tasks with *WAY WAY HIGHER ENERGY* replacements that *do not even work*

Pedro Sánchez @sanchezcastejon wrote on Twitter: Ceasefires are always good news. Especially if they lead to a just and lasting peace. But this momentary relief cannot make us forget the chaos, the destruction, and the lives lost. The Government of Spain will not applaud those who set the world on fire just because they show up with a bucket. What's needed now: diplomacy, international legality, and PEACE. The Spain's Prime Minister and his official reaction to the #ceasefire this morning (translated from Spanish).
"The Government of #Spain will not applaud those who set the world on fire just because they show up with a bucket."
I mean the tractor people are technically (far) right when they blame foreigners for the rise in fuel prices.
If you want us to have sympathy maybe stop letting absolute window lickers speak on your behalf.
Blockade the US and Israeli embassies, the real cause of the fuel rise.

Like I get what he's saying but Ireland actually mostly exports high value luxury items like dairy and meat and ingredients like milk powder. We actually import most of what people actually eat
Don't threaten me with a good time
As Trump degenerates and plumbs the depths of unprecedented depravity, Western world leaders cannot sit silently by.
"Trump is now raving like a murderous zealot, threatening nuclear war and the complete obliteration of the Iranian people. Moreover, he has the means to make good on this threat and no moral compass that would stop him."

Don't taco Tuesday this shit. Millions of people spent the day wondering if they would get vaporized, and no one in our government stood up to him. Nothing cutesy about it.
In Jan 2024, Die „Letzte Generation“ staged a climate protest in Leipzig where they sat on toy tractors so they'd be treated the same as these other protestors
The police were not fooled
Has anyone in the Irish government actually addressed that Trump threatened to exterminate a civilisation yet? #spéirgorm
This is misleading and not how Irish agriculture works. Homegrown produce here is a highly inefficient (beef!) export business to take advantage of higher foreign prices from an unearned aura of chemical-free wholesomeness, which is why we now import so much of e.g. the potatoes we eat #spéirgorm
Never seen an antiiwar, water or anti-austerity protest be left to do this sort of thing and cause this much disruption before.
A protestor who blocked the port protesting the genocide in Gaza had his wrist broken when thrown to the ground by Gardaí.
I've been shoved and threatened for daring to get close to shutting down the access road to Shannon Airport.
It's amazing how different the Gardaí's response is here...
I absolutely loathe these people. Not just cos they’re infiltrated by the far-right and conspiracy theorists, but also because they only ever show up for their own narrow self-interest. When have they ever shown solidarity with literally any group in society other than themselves?
That's why the subsidies need to pivot accordingly. If we want genuine food security that doesn't rely on imports we need to pay for it. The CAP rules are due to change in 2028. Hopefully they provide that opportunity.
Greta Thunberg: "The President of the United States just said that a whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again & no one is reacting. This speaks for itself: what the fuck is anyone even doing at this point? We have normalized genocide, total annihilation of entire people."
You know how everyone always worries about women being too emotional to be in charge? I know people say it all the time but *gestures wildly around*
Men have had a hundred million goes at it and here we are. I'm over it.
The EU pump €2Bn a year into Irish agriculture, 80% of which is direct payments to farmers, a lot of which goes to hiring contractors like this buck.
Imagine the rest of the EU said "look after our own first".
