Photograph taken using a macro setting of a Japanese Iris in a hothouse at Chatsworth House. Not seen these before. Their shape drew my attention because, let's be honest, there's not a whole lot of raucous colour going on. Lifted the flower and held it over the dark soil to get some contrast in the shot. Image shows a Japanese Iris dominating the frame from the top left corner. Bottom right corner is dark brown soil and the two frame edges have straight green leaves in the background. The iris has delicate petals, some with almost frilly edges arching backwards to expose more of its central petals. These protrude forwards with fingery edges not unlike some fine seaweeds.The central petals have a central stripe of the palest lavender. The outer petals, arching back have a pale egg-yolk yellow stripe with tiny spots of a warm grey. 'Pale and interesting' is how I was described by a family member once. Never forgotten it!

Photograph taken using a macro setting and a monochrome filter, of the trunk of a Lacy Tree Philodendron growing happily in the old hothouse at Ripley Castle gardens in Yorkshire. It's the strangest looking tree trunk I've ever seen - so full of texture and shapes. Portrait frame with two-thirds taken over by the trunk (from the left edge) and the right-hand third being huge leaves in the background. The trunk has two obvious large roundish shapes surrounded by rough edges with tiny spines. The surface of the circles looks almost whitewashed with ridges and dots like a stubbly chin. Around these circular areas are longer rough strands. Loved getting inside the hothouse. Although it needed a large cash injection and many of the plants had been left to their own devices, there were signs that someone was doing their best up against an immense challenge, adding quirky touches here and there. As a gardener I could think of far worse places to work! Know I'd have been stuck in the scullery (darn good at washing up) but would have chosen this if I could. Photograph taken at The Lost Gardens of Heligan in the depths of beautiful Cornwall. Image taken looking into the hothouse built against a whitewashed wall. There is a decorative metal grill that looks like tiles at first glance, that runs the length of the space. Separating the place is a wall of long, thin glass windows set within a white frame with an door frame (no door). The glass ceiling slopes diagonally down from the wall on the right, which is covered in vines basking in the sunlight. On the wall are two levels of shelves - sturdy wooden planks supported by fancy black brackets on the lower shelves and simple ones on the top shelf. The lower shelf is full of terracotta pots of various sizes containing succulents and geraniums. At floor level is a flower bed either side. Both contain a mixture of plants including stralitzia, yuccas, huge succulents, agapanthus, and lots of getaniums (variegated and plainer leaved) blooming in pinks and tomato reds. The light is soft and diffused thanks to the vines.
