The top left main image shows a square-like geometric design created with pattern blocks. At the center, four green triangles and four tan rhombuses are surrounded by four orange squares and eight blue rhombuses. This same arrangement is repeated in each of the four corners. Around the central design are four dodecagons, each made from four orange squares, four red trapezoids, and four tan rhombuses. The images along the bottom and on the right show the progression of the design.

Number Club games are so cool. I don't recommend very many digital tools. This one rocks. Kids get natural feedback "did my move work or not" that helps them make their next move. Math-ing!

Let $S_n$ denote the sum of the first $n$ terms of a particular arithmetic sequence.

If $S_{50}=200$ and $S_{200}=50$, for what value of $n$ does $S_n$ attain its maximum value?

Lists of numbers on a whiteboard representing the denominators of Egyptian ("unit") fractions that add up to 1.

Just did a deep dive into Egyptian #fractions with my #algebra 2 classes. At the end they had to come up with 5 Egyptian Fractions (1 is the numerator) that add up to 1. These lists are the denominators.
[2,5,6,9,45] means 1/2 + 1/5 + 1/6 + 1/9 + 1/45 = 1

Use 9 different integers in a 3 by 3 grid. The numbers in the top row multiply to -102. The numbers in the middle row multiply to -180. The numbers in the bottom row multiply to 22. The numbers in the left column multiply to 170. The numbers in the middle column multiply to 27. The numbers in the right column multiply to 88. The sum of the integers in the 2 by 2 square at the top left of the grid is 0.

Showed freshmen today how to put square roots in simplest radical form.

Them asked them about a cube root, and higher roots. They were astounded!

“This is REVOLUTIONIZING!”

2026 Mathematics Game Now that we're a few months into the year, many of our New Near’s resolutions have probably fallen by the wayside. It’s inevitable, according to Mark Twain, that we shall “cast our reformation to the winds and go to cutting our ancient shortcomings considerably shorter than ever.” But there is one resolution that I enjoy keeping---the resolve to play more math.

2026 Mathematics Game -- I love the year game! It’s new every time, and such a fun way to build number skills. I do hope you give it a try.

Math teacher problems. Jersey schools are required to have 180 days of instruction.

I want to make a cute little countdown for the end of the school year with fractions, decimals and percents. Why do I keep counting 179 days?!👀😳

“Perhaps the most inspiring conclusion from Silver’s analysis is that the association between a parent’s math talk and a child’s math performance was as strong for a low-income child as it was for a high-income child.” (via @HechingerReport.org) buff.ly/ISrHZag #AcademicSky #MathSky #iTeachMath
