FUNNY GOD Page 10 …behind it all. What we need today are peaceful warriors and silly heroes. We need folks willing to play cards with their dragons, not slay them. This “resistance” involves sacrifice not additional killing, compassion not “toughness,” and silliness not stoicism. It corresponds to a spiritual and religious approach — one that has been used down through the ages, although less often than a militant one — of surrender, not struggle. It is rooted in a faith in a beneficent Universe, a compassionate and truly loving Divinity, maybe even a funny or silly God. For it relies on an assumption that rightness and Truth are ultimately stronger than evil and untruth. It is sathyagraha, truth-power, as demonstrated by Mahatma Ghandi. It wonders why we would not be borne up by a Universe along the line of whose basic inclinations and nature we are laying down our intents and actions. In this way, it is dharmic and expects to succeed on that basis alone, either overtly, or in some way that one is not able to know or imagine in this life; for so much of the consequences of our actions, subtle and not so, are unknown to us.

So they do not try to impose or overly control the ends or goals; they seek to find them out. For no one, indeed, has done this before, so how could one even see the ends. They, as Occupy protesters, are criticized for exactly that — not having clear goals and ends. What their critics do not understand is that something truly new cannot be foreseen but only discovered. And its discovery is dependent on a righteousness of means — a strict adherence to a code that says that one will not become that which one despises and that, hence, what one will become is unknown, but guaranteed to be better. This stance toward change says defiantly, “I will not be like that which I oppose … whatever the consequences might be.” They see that every slaying of a dragon is merely the cutting off of a head of the Hydra, as in the Heracles myth, with another one sprouting to take its place.

FUNNY GOD Page 8 This response seeks to win over the opposition through example, thus eliminating it, rather than out and out confronting it and seeking to destroy it using the same violent methods being used on them. These folks have an astute understanding of history, which has seen, time after time, that struggle begets more struggle, that the “new boss” risen up becomes much like the “old boss,” needing then, at a later time, another uprising to install another “new boss.” Many of them, aware of the intransigence of their own unwanted patterns or cycles of emotion and feeling, have gained wisdom in how to go beyond them. They see these cycles of history likewise — as endless reenactments, requiring a stance outside of them for real change to occur. They are impelled into a creative alternative as a reaction to the futility that is inherent in the continuation of these cycles. They understand that evil cannot be overcome through more evil, violence through more violence. Unlike virtually every cinema plot, they do not see that a rising up in arms and a vanquishing of oppressors does anything more than reinforce a world in which “might makes right.”

He left a grand legacy of how to live authentically in this illusion of life and transcend it. According to the film, Kaufman was a student of Transcendental Meditation and it was an important part of his life. One line in particular, from the film, expresses the spiritual attitude toward his life he sought to embody: “I think of the world as an illusion, and we shouldn’t take ourselves so seriously.” Andy Kaufman, like the pro wrestler act that became one of his shticks, created a drama in life of his own making and goofed on us all. Not a little goof; in his life and career he had fun with everyone; there were few people who saw a serious side. He held life lightly, experimented, and played. If, as Sathya Sai Baba says, life is God’s leela, or play, then Andy Kaufman lived his life in a Creator’s mind; he was a silly god … a funny god.2

They painted, danced, performed, practiced yoga, painted faces, drummed, strummed, and plinked. They played. Freed, temporarily, from the confines of the societal straitjacket of normality, their imaginations exploded and they were euphoric. They confronted the police while playing guitars. Threatened with being attacked and ousted from nearby Taksim Square, the Turkish resisters brought in pianos and filled the night with music. Mothers and sisters linked hands and arms and formed a circle around the targeted protesters to keep the police away. As journalists Jody Sabral and Zynep Erdim phrased it for the BBC, “Revolutions take commitment and determination … are often messy and confusing…. FUNNY GOD Page 6 …the worldwide Occupy movements beginning in 2011, and to the activist resistance in America in the Sixties. Protesters confronted policemen and military with bayonets by placing flowers in their guns in the Sixties. In Turkey, one man read from a book of philosophy to the line of police. The resistances in Turkey, Brazil, Hungary, the United States, the Ukraine, and many more Occupy events worldwide took to activities such as dressing as clowns and grinning at police lines; they hugged and kissed the police at times. One man took a giant pencil and aped that he was attempting to rub off a paint splatter on the shield of a policeman. In Brazil, during their Occupy protests, also in 2013, one man, confronted with attacking police and a gun, aped a karate stance of a swooping bird. Back at Gezi Park in Turkey, in between confrontations, these activists partnered up and waltzed in the streets wearing gas masks; they gave performances where ballet and other dancers, despite wearing gas masks, showed off their skills and brought happiness to their audiences. Mimes, musicians, actors, and dancers frolicked and put on skits.

Liking the quotes above is like being enamored of one’s chains. Does it not occur to anyone how the same rationale is used today by the one percent to keep people down and from being able to fight back or revolt? Drive them into poverty, instill in them the value of hard work, and leave them no time to think. That way they will never awake to their servitude or, if they do, will be too tired and beaten down to do anything about it. I mean, you can kiss and cuddle with your chains, as in falling for the self-flagellating quotes above. But realize you are looking awfully silly doing it.

How is it some folks, no matter their intelligence, still operate at such a childish level? It doesn’t speak well of progressives. I hope there are lots of other ones who are not so paranoid. I feel out of water around supposedly enlightened folks who are taken in by such right-wing religious propaganda. Fear is one thing intelligence cannot seem to budge. Maybe that is why only crying — that is, feeling one’s feelings and emotional release — works to free one from the common insanity. I can tell you this as a trained primal therapist and holotropic breathwork facilitator of many decades experience. There is no devil. There is only fear of devil. FUNNY GOD Page xxii ….who don’t believe in God but do believe in a devil!? How can progressives believe in one supernatural being (devil) if they make fun of those who believe in another one (God)? Or, putting it another way ... if one is going to go believing in supernatural fantasies, why in hell would one choose the most horrible one imaginable to believe in? What is it, progressives can’t accept anything good? Only see their own shadow? Are merely paranoid? We expect that on the right. That kind of fear is what practically defines a right wing and a conservative world view. But the left? Supposedly free-thinkers? It is not just the quotes above. I have for years detected much paranoia on the left — much of it warranted, I grant you — but erupting in florid supernatural fantasies of a dark nature. So I don’t just mean “the devil” in a classical sense: as Satan, and such. For do progressives who believe in the Illuminati, Satanic rituals of Masonics, reptilian people in government or spying on us from behind the moon not realize how much they sound like Church Lady? Remember when your mother used to scare you into behaving by telling you “the bogeyman will get you”?
