a screenshot from a Lincoln Journal-Star article about today's vote on the main budget bills in the Nebraska Legislature. the image is mostly text, but there is a small inset photo at the left of Speaker John Arch reacting in disbelief. the text reads as follows:

Without any further debate, Nebraska lawmakers gave final approval to both budget bills Wednesday, but not before playing an April Fools joke on Speaker John Arch of La Vista.

On the final reading vote for the main budget bill (LB1071), the vote board turned red with no votes before lawmakers shouted "April Fools" and flipped their votes to green.

Both bills passed on final reading in a 35-13 vote, with lawmakers voting the same way on both the main budget bill (LB1071) and the cash funds transfer bill (LB1072). The budget is now on its way to Gov. Jim Pillen's desk.

While legislative rules say the budget must be sent to the governor's desk by Wednesday, or Day 50 of this legislative session, Arch told reporters on March 20 it is not a constitutional requirement, which granted lawmakers a little more time to debate, amend and pass a balanced budget.

LB 304 is on the #NEleg agenda today and needs your support. The bill would help low-income families who rely on assistance for affordable child care. If it doesn't pass, thousands of Nebraska families will lose access to child care.

the #neleg already broke its own rules by not having a balanced budget to the gov's desk by day 50, and last night my lobbyist friend told me the current budget bill is "in a ditch" so they're on course to violate the state constitution too if they don't get it done before adjourning on day 60

Republican legislatures already grappling with budget shortfalls consider further cuts and new taxes to cover funding gaps by the "big, beautiful bill."
Side note: The Nebraska federal delegation including Congressmen Bacon and Flood voted for this to happen. #NEleg

I made a fuss directly to my representatives in the #neleg. They want to vote in city elections? They can pay all the city taxes.
