What you need to know before emissions regulators come knocking IT infrastructure-related carbon emissions reporting is slowly becoming a global regulatory requirement. The International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) have incorporated climate-related financial disclosure requirements, including obligations to inventory and report Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. Individual countries – including Australia, Brazil, China, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, and the United Kingdom, as well as the European Union and the State of California (United States) – have enacted these standards into law, although some countries have delayed or minimised Scope 3 reporting. Emissions reporting is subject to strict accounting and audit requirements, with fines and reputational risk for those firms whose reporting does not comply with the applicable standards. For many companies, emissions associated with IT infrastructure operations account for a significant part or even most of their total emissions inventory. With operations typically spread across owned, colo, and cloud data centres, capturing a complete energy use and emissions inventory depends on the data available from cloud and colocation service providers. Cloud emissions data Cloud service providers have significantly improved their emissions dashboards over the past several years. They allocate Scope 1, location- and market-based Scope 2, and limited Scope 3 emissions related to their public cloud operations (see...

New Study Finds Reducing Emissions Isn't the Only Key to Saving Lives from Air Pollution A groundbreaking study from the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) at the University of York has unveiled a paradigm-shifting perspective on global air pollution mortality trends over the past three decades. Published in the prestigious journal The Lancet Planetary Health, this comprehensive global modeling research challenges the conventional narrative that primarily attributes reductions in air pollution-related deaths to cleaner air alone. Instead, it highlights an equally significant, yet often overlooked factor: reductions in population vulnerability driven by socioeconomic improvements, such as enhanced access to quality healthcare and widespread poverty alleviation. Between 1990 and 2019, global mortality rates linked to ambient air pollution decreased by approximately 45%. This impressive decline has historically been credited to concerted efforts to reduce emissions of hazardous pollutants. However, the study finds that roughly 52% of this decrease can actually be traced to reductions in vulnerability. Vulnerability here encompasses a complex array of determinants including healthcare access, prevalence of pre-existing medical conditions, smoking habits, and general public health measures. This finding profoundly shifts the focus from pollutant concentrations alone to a more integrative approach involving social determinants of health. At the core of this study lies the intricate relationship between air pollution exposure and a population’s susceptibility...

Environmental Defense Fund: EPA Moves To Weaken Rule To Reduce Methane Emissions From Oil & Gas Operations The changes are designed to save the industry over $208 million a year in compliance costs. EPA said the final rule responds to several petitions for reconsideration and feedback from industry. Among the changes, EPA pointed to changes in requirements for flaring natural gas. EPA said the 2024 Final Rule phased out routine flaring of associated natural gas from new sources, but allowed owners and operators to perform temporary flaring for up to 24 hours in maintenance situations. However, serious concerns were raised that this limited time frame did not provide enough time for owners and operators to troubleshoot and repair equipment, putting energy reliability for American families and the safety of workers at risk. Under the Trump EPA’s revisions, owners and operators will now be able to utilize temporary flaring for up to 72 hours. [Under Pennsylvania regulations, shale gas well bores are only required to be located 500 feet from the nearest homes. DEP has issued permits for 24,555 shale gas wells in the state, as of March 27, 2026] The Biden EPA’s final rule also required continuous monitoring of the net heating value (NHV) of vent gas from flares and enclosed combustion devices (ECD). Based on data...

South Africa's carbon conundrum: Economic growth and innovation fuel emissions, while renewables offer a path forward A comprehensive new analysis of South Africa’s environmental footprint reveals a complex and often contradictory relationship between development and pollution. Researchers Frank Ranganai Matenda, Helper Zhou, and Mabutho Sibanda from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, alongside Asif Raihan of the National University of Malaysia, examined three decades of national data to untangle the key drivers of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions. The investigation, spanning from 1990 to 2020, exposes how economic progress, globalization, and even technological innovation are currently contributing to rising emissions, while highlighting the significant potential of renewable energy to reverse this trend. Decoding Three Decades of Emissions To quantify the long-term impacts of various national policies and economic trends, the research team employed a robust statistical method known as the Dynamic Ordinary Least Squares (DOLS) estimator. This technique is particularly well-suited for analyzing time-series data with complex, evolving relationships. The model assessed how five key variables—economic growth, fossil fuel consumption, renewable energy consumption, technological innovation (measured by patent applications), and globalization—influenced South Africa’s CO₂ emissions over the 31-year period. To ensure the reliability of their conclusions, the findings were rigorously cross-validated using two other advanced econometric methods, the Fully Modified Least Squares (FMOLS) and Canonical Cointegrating Regression (CCR). The...

MIT researchers measure traffic emissions, to the block, in real-time In a study focused on New York City, MIT researchers have shown that existing sensors and mobile data can be used to generate a near real-time, high-resolution picture of auto emissions, which could be used to develop local transportation and decarbonization policies. The new method produces much more detailed data than some other common approaches, which use intermittent samples of vehicle emissions. The researchers say it is also more practical and scales up better than some studies that have aimed for very granular emissions data from a small number of automobiles at once. The work helps bridge the gap between less-detailed citywide emissions inventories and highly detailed analyses based on individual vehicles. “Our model, by combining real-time traffic cameras with multiple data sources, allows extrapolating very detailed emission maps, down to a single road and hour of the day,” says Paolo Santi, a principal research scientist in the MIT Senseable City Lab and co-author of a new paper detailing the project’s results. “Such detailed information can prove very helpful to support decision-making and understand effects of traffic and mobility interventions.” Carlo Ratti, director of the MIT Senseable City Lab, notes that the research “is part of our lab’s ongoing quest...

Machine learning tracks methane emissions from orbit Methane is the second most important anthropogenic greenhouse gas after carbon dioxide, with a global warming potential roughly 28–34 times greater over a 100-year timescale. Major sources include fossil-fuel production, agriculture, livestock, and landfill waste. In recent years, hyperspectral satellite remote sensing has become an important means of detecting methane emissions because it can identify methane absorption features and reveal plume structures from orbit. However, converting these observations into reliable emission estimates remains a major challenge. Widely used approaches such as the integrated mass enhancement (IME) method depend on simplified assumptions about the relationship between plume mass and wind speed. In practice, these assumptions often fail to capture the complex interaction between atmospheric transport and plume shape, leading to substantial uncertainty in methane flux estimates. To address this limitation, researchers from East China Normal University and collaborating institutions recently reported (DOI: 10.34133/remotesensing.1013) a new methane-monitoring framework called CH4Vision in the Journal of Remote Sensing (published February 27, 2026). Using hyperspectral observations from the GaoFen-5 satellite, CH4Vision estimates methane emission flux by analyzing both plume morphology and concentration distributions. Rather than relying on a simple linear relationship, the framework uses machine learning to infer emission rates from a richer set of...

Substantial aircraft contrail formation at low soot emission levels The A321neo Airbus A321neo-251NX (serial no. 7877) was equipped with two CFM LEAP-1A engines. The CFM LEAP-1A35 turbofan engine has a maximum rated thrust of 143.1 kN, a maximum overall pressure ratio of 38.5 and a bypass ratio of 10.5; see Unique Identification Number 01P20CM135 for its emission certification data29. The CFM LEAP-1A features a lean-burn combustor or staged combustor with a rich-burn pilot stage and a lean-burn main stage28. The lean-burn mode is operated during take-off, climb and cruise phases. Both the central pilot injector and the annular main injector ring inject fuel into the combustion chamber, resulting in wide areas of lean fuel-to-air ratios and a more homogeneous temperature distribution in the combustor. The annular main injector is switched off for descent and taxi phases (rich-burn mode) to avoid combustor instability. Operating conditions typical for cruise were selected for the flight tests, and the T30 temperature at the combustor inlet was fixed for the different measurement points to allow comparability between lean-burn and rich-burn conditions. As the combustor normally operates in lean-burn conditions at cruise, engine steering control adjustments were made by the manufacturer to enable controlled operation in the forced rich-burn mode at cruise. US emissions caused over $10tn in global economic damage since 1990, study finds The United States (US) has caused more than $10 trillion in global economic damage since 1990 through its greenhouse gas emissions, according to a new study published in the journal Nature. As the largest historical emitter of carbon dioxide, the US is responsible for about $10.2 trillion in cumulative climate-related economic damages worldwide through 2020, making it the biggest contributor to global losses linked to rising temperatures. Around 30 per cent of the economic damage linked to US emissions , roughly $2.97 trillion, occurred within the United States itself, while about 14 per cent ($1.39 trillion) affected the European Union, the two regions that experienced the largest total GDP losses. For India, the estimated damage from US emissions amounts to around $500 billion and for Brazil, about $330 billion, according to the research. “These are huge numbers,” said Marshall Burke, an environmental scientist at Stanford University who led the study. Burke added that the US has “a lot of responsibility, our emissions have caused damage not only to ourselves, but pretty substantial damage in other parts of the world”. Instead of taking accountability, US has stepped back from several international climate commitments. On January 20, 2025, President Donald Trump signed...

UK: 2026 Emissions Forecast Forecast: By the end of 2026, UK territorial emissions are expected to be approximately 3–4% lower than in 2024. In 2024, the United Kingdom recorded a renewed decline in territorial greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, reinforcing its long-term decarbonization narrative while also exposing the limits of progress achieved so far. Provisional government statistics show total emissions of 371 MtCO₂e, down 4% from 2023 and 54% below 1990 levels. The reduction was driven primarily by the power sector, where the final closure of coal-fired generation and reduced gas use delivered sizeable gains. Yet as the UK enters the second half of the decade, the character of emissions reduction is changing. The “low-hanging fruit” of electricity decarbonisation has largely been harvested. Further progress now depends on structurally harder sectors: road transport, residential heating, industrial processes, and land use. These sectors move more slowly, are more exposed to policy reversals, and are sensitive to consumer behaviour and economic conditions. This report provides an evidence-based forecast of how UK emissions are likely to change by the end of 2026, broken down by major sectors. It assesses whether that trajectory is sufficient to meet objectives under the Paris Agreement. Forecast: By the end of 2026, UK...

What is the role of deforestation in climate change and how can 'Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation' (REDD+) How does deforestation contribute to climate change? Deforestation refers to the purposeful clearing or thinning of trees and forests. When deforestation occurs, much of the carbon stored by trees is released back into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide, which contributes to climate change . Land use change, principally deforestation, contributes 13–21% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Forest degradation (changes that negatively affect a forest’s structure or function but that do not decrease its area), and the destruction of tropical peatlands, also contribute to these emissions. As a result of deforestation and degradation, some tropical forests now emit more carbon than they capture, turning them from a carbon ‘sink’ into a carbon source. For example, the south-eastern part of the Amazon Rainforest is now considered a net carbon source by scientists. Due to drought and unusually high temperatures in 2023 (1.5°C above typical levels from 1991 to 2020), the entire Amazon rainforest became a ‘weak source’ of CO2 emissions in 2023. It is too early to know whether this occurrence will continue into the future, as the carbon balance of the Amazon rainforest is contingent on net growth (total growth and carbon uptake minus deforestation) and climatic factors. However, the shift...

Producing more rice with fewer emissions: a global meta-analysis At a global scale, the baseline GHG emissions from rice cultivation estimated at the lowest GY (387 kg/ha) are 3519 kg CO2eq/ha [CI: 1960, 5114] (Fig.1a). This corresponds to a GHGI of 0.96 kg CO2eq/kg paddy [CI: 0.68, 1.26] (Fig.1b). CH4 accounts for around 93.9% of total emissions, with N2O contributing only 6.1%. Each additional kilogram per hectare of GY increases GWP by 0.11 kg CO2eq, driven by rising CH4 emissions (Fig.1a, c). The correlation coefficient between GY and GWP was relatively low (Fig.1a). GHGI decreased as GY increased (Fig.1b), with yield improvements outpacing emission increases across the dataset. Farming practices, grain yield and greenhouse gas emissions We evaluated farming practices’ effects on GY and GHG emissions, grouping them into four categories: Pre-planting - including farming systems, growing duration (varieties) and tillage methods. Planting and water management - covering planting techniques and water regimes. Nutrient management – encompassing nitrogen application, manure and compost use. Postharvest – including residue management. A total of eight cultivation practices, divided into 37 categories (Supplementary Table 2), were analysed, with differences expressed as percentages for clarity, focusing on statistically significant results. Six farming systems were identified and assessed in this review: Single-Rice, Double-Rice, Triple-Rice, Rice-Aquatic-Dual-Systems,...

India sets new targets to cut emissions intensity, increase renewables share by 2035 In a move welcomed by experts and environmental groups, India has announced new targets to lower the intensity of its greenhouse gas emissions and boost the share of renewables in its electricity system. The country’s latest Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), announced Wednesday, committed to cutting emissions intensity to 47 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP) by 2035. The plan, which countries typically submit once every five years to the United Nations, maintains India’s goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2070. It also set a target of 60 per cent of non-fossil electricity capacity to be achieved by then, although this is lower than the near-70 per cent mix that India’s Central Electricity Authority has forecast for 2035-2036 in its National Power Adequacy Plan. Experts suggested that the government is being deliberately conservative in its pledges. The country has faced severe impacts from the war in West Asia, with roughly half of its crude imports and over 60 per cent of liquified natural gas and liquified petroleum gas transiting through the Strait of Hormuz, a report by The Oxford Institute for Energy Studies noted. “A targeted 60 per cent share of non-fossil electricity capacity in 2035 suggests that while...
