Do #PhysicalActivity programmes really work in low- and middle-income countries?

Our recently published systematic review in BJSM suggests yes. The gains are often modest, but they matter, when scaled across populations.

Relationship Among Internet Use, eHealth Literacy, Internet Addiction, and #PhysicalActivity Among #Adolescents: Cross-Sectional Study Background: The internet is highly convenient and has become an indispensable part of daily life. However, its widespread use also has notable disadvantages, such as the risk of internet addiction. Still, increased internet use may enhance eHealth literacy, and online health information seeking may contribute to health promotion. In Hong Kong, internet addiction and low #PhysicalActivity among #Adolescents are growing concerns, underscoring the need to address internet use to better support the health and well-being of youth. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effects of internet use, eHealth literacy, and internet addiction on #Adolescents’ #PhysicalActivity in Hong Kong. Methods: An online cross-sectional study was conducted in Hong Kong between June 2023 and August 2023. Secondary school students aged 12 to 18 years were recruited. Data were collected using the eHealth Literacy Scale, the International #PhysicalActivity Questionnaire, the Chen Internet Addiction Scale, and a questionnaire assessing demographic characteristics and the use of eHealth technologies. Spearman ρ correlation and mediation analyses were performed to examine the relationships among variables. Results: A total of 117 participants were included. Participants reported an average internet use of 5.28 (SD 3.50) hours per day, and the mean eHealth literacy score was 31.15 (SD 4.04). Correlation analyses revealed that internet use was positively correlated with internet addiction (=0.33;

Brief bursts of vigorous activity linked to lower risk of eight major diseases A large international study analyzed data from nearly 96,000 UK Biobank participants to examine how the balance between total physical activity and its intensity affects health outcomes. Researchers found that incorporating short, vigorous bursts of activity—such as briskly climbing stairs or sprinting to catch a bus—into daily life is associated with significantly lower risks of eight major diseases and death, even when the total active time remains relatively small. The study showed the strongest associations with inflammatory conditions (like arthritis and psoriasis), dementia, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes. Participants wore wrist accelerometers to capture precise movement patterns, allowing researchers to quantify both overall activity and the fraction that was vigorous enough to cause breathlessness. Those with higher shares of vigorous activity had markedly lower risk across conditions, including a 63% lower risk of dementia and a 60% lower risk of type 2 diabetes, compared with those who did no vigorous activity. The results suggest that exercise quality matters as much as quantity, and that personalized guidelines could tailor recommendations based on individual health risks. However, vigorous activity may not be suitable for everyone, particularly older adults or people with certain medical conditions, and any new activity should be undertaken with medical advice.
