Also, here you see — as elsewhere in the highest portions of the range — the pre-uplift material that sit on top of the granite-ish plutons that rose to produce the range. Diamond Peak is a great example: Here at a very high elevation you suddenly have these gently sloping alpine plateaus.
The relative dryness of the range is also significant, as is the predominant granite-ish rock.
This particular area, in the far upper Kern River drainage, is different that the rest of the Sierra. There are vast areas above timberline, and the terrain is open and rocky.
