Was happy to score this white label promo of The Mighty Clouds Of Joy's 1975 LP "Kickin'" which in fact kicks off with a song I pretty much only knew from a notable cover by Jerry Garcia. In fact, Jerry closed the first show of his I saw in NJ with it (9/17/76) and performed it during that period quite a bit: "Mighty High." Great gospel group which crossed over to the mainstream... Happy bargyn bin find.

Sometimes I’m relieved that he’s a TACO, but not enough to ever forgive him - or the people who voted for him or those who otherwise enabled him.

I kind of assumed the dim bulbs in the White House thought they could order Automatic Patriotic Wartime Effect (APWE) the way you order pizza, then skipped all the steps like warming up the public and having a reason and a plan, and well it's not working and we're not forgetting the Epstein files.

What I'd forgotten was that there were 2 tour balloons & an autographed poster inside. The black ballon was dead out but the white one was functional so I blew it up for a pic to include in the box as a memory. Grateful I saw two shows on this tour, the last night officially released on DVD.

Been going down a bit of Nektar rabbit-hole and revisited this handy 2011 CD retrospective set which a friend (who prefers to remain nameless) bought for me as a gift at one of the shows that year (thank you again mystery friend!). What I'd forgotten was that there were two tour balloons and an autographed poster in the set.

The black ballon was compressed and drying out but the white one was still functional so I blew it for a photo (which I've printed out to include in the box as a memory for when it eventually dries up). Grateful I got to see two shows on this tour, the last night of the tour which was officially released on DVD.

Did I "need" another Chico Hamilton album? No but (a) I'd never seen this before and (b) it was a buc, the vinyl in nice shape so... why not? Nice guitars from Jim Hall or Howard Roberts. George Duvivier on bass. Seems to be an expanded 1956 edition of a 1955 LP with a different cover. Nice stuff. Pretty chill.

Added new 2026 thoughts: I suspect The Who's Face Dances (1981) cover art was at least minimally inspired by this... That said, this cover would never have flown well in the US ni 1970...

The booklet shows faces of the artists including Deep Purple's Ian Gillan. Very very curious distinct differences in how this then-controversial show was marketed in the States vs. the UK.

Today [again this post was in 2015] I found an original UK pressing ($2 at a fave thrift shop) which is a completely different packaging experience than the relatively subdued US (brown/beige) version, with a fold out "star" design featuring various artist renditions of JC inside.

It was on the radio, a studio recording that preceded any live or filmed staging. Important perspective now 40+ years on where many just know it for the movie version.

After The Who's Tommy, JCS was the next big rock opera to break out into the mainstream.

Curiously, FB wouldn't let me just "reshare" an old post from January 2015 so I'm just going to post reshare anew here. The original post follows:

Growing up as a little kid in 1970, you couldn't escape hearing Andrew Lloyd Weber's groundbreaking rock opera, Jesus Christ Superstar, on the radio, a studio recording that preceded any live or filmed staging. Important perspective now 40+ years on where many just know it for the movie version.

Elon Musk is now worth over $800 billion.

Tesla reported paying ZERO federal income tax on $5.7 billion of U.S. income in 2025.

Meanwhile, millions of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck and household debt has risen to a record high.

This is what I mean when I say the system is rigged.

A President simply cannot do this. It’s not like “controversial” or “breaking norms.” The President not controlling our money is the main structural support beam of American democracy. It’s the whole fucking thing. You let him do this, you have ended the separation of powers.

LEAGUE OF GENTLEMEN - Dislocated (1980) YouTube video by 30KWPA

I like what I've been hearing from Angine de Poitrine so far, but I also can't help but think about music from Robert Fripp's short lived League Of Gentlemen (which included Barry Andrews from the early incarnation of XTC). #musicsky #music #fripp

It's not often that you find a 45 RPM single by Gary Usher' & Curt Boettcher's Sagittarius… But I did at a local thrift for .75c. Shown here with the LP it's from, which I found years ago at a thrift an hour south of Palm Springs for 2$ (a promo copy!).

My listening report about the new Definitive Sound Series "one step" process remaster of R.E.M.'a 1982 debut, Chronic Town -- issued as a double play with the band's 1983 debut album Murmur -- is now on Analog Planet (dot com).

Spoiler Alert: Both sound tremendous!

The Army Chief of Staff, a combat veteran with tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, asked Pete Hegseth why he was blocking the promotions of two Black officers and two female officers who had earned them.

Hegseth refused to answer. Then he fired him.

Trump is calling for a record $1.5T defense budget.

Roughly half of this spending will go to private contractors, many of whom routinely price-gouge the government.

Reminder that Don Jr. and Eric Trump are big investors in drone companies looking to obtain defense contracts.

See the problem?

Friday begins with #ShonenKnife 's special expanded vinyl edition of 2023's "Our Best Place," continuing this great Japanese band's trajectory of fun. It includes my current fave song about spicy vegetable curry. My review on eCoustics (dot com). #musicsky #music

Feels like you are sitting in a living room with a bunch of friends playing music they love, really well! Includes the booklet which I've yet to read fully but no doubt will. For now I'm just enjoying the fun.

Apparently these folks were popular here between 1910 and 1925 but didn't get to release a full album until this one, which is basically a private home session that was never intended for release.

My partner would call this Sponge Bob Squarepants music: guitars, mandolin, acoustic lap slide/slack guitar and stand up bass. Early jazz flavors and nice soloing throughout...
Effectively this was a local New Orleans band who only issue two private release records in 1949. Cont'd...

I'm loving this more than expected: The Six And Seven-Eight String Band Of New Orleans. Found at a thrift or the flea market but the amazing thing beyond the fact that this 1956 LP was not played much if at all is that the music is jolly fun!
