I’ve been really looking forward to the StatsCan results for the 2025 census to see if we are on track for Surrey to overtake Vancouver as BC’s biggest municipality soon. The old projections from BCStats signaled the overtake to happen in 2027, but a lot has changed since the census of 2021.

Today is #VancouverDay, and the incorporated city is turning 140+. But the history of settlement on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations goes back much, much further. 🧵

My takeaway from Atmosphere: it needs to be WAY easier for builders to get paid

So I built at.fund

at.fund detects the tools you use, and tells you how to fund the builders who make those tools. And if you're a builder, it takes seconds to add records to that tell your users how to fund you 👍

I agree totally that “for now” a single org makes sense, just to get started. I am just saying there needs to be “make a new shape” right from the beginning. Otherwise you end up with CSSWG extending its 2 year time box… for 25 years.

Centralized Foundations are just too convenient.

If it starts with a single foundation it either needs to be time-limited or have a requirement to spin off other foundations: drive to polycentricity.

How do we slice it up, and in a way where the parts must work together and no one can filibuster?

Funding models are not binary. Beyond philanthopy and VC, there are other patterns including mission-locked, co-op, concessionary, community & oss.

Here's the updated "Funding Models Are Not Binary" slide from my Feature/Product/Business talk #ATmosphereConf. Turns out there are even more great examples already in the Atmosphere!
