The RA & Dec data at 15:54:30 (UT), namely 18 02 08.81 -26 36 26.6, is highlighted and entered into ASTAP. The time corresponds to the start time (UT) of the 30sec exposure stored in the FITS header. ASTAP then marks the image with the location of the crewed Artemis II Orion spacecraft.

The same coordinates can also be used to identify Artemis in images using the astrometric plate solver ASTAP (www.hnsky.org/astap.htm). This table lists the computed RA & Dec coordinates for Artemis II at specific times (UT) on 2026-04-02 for my location.

Horizons System

The celestial coordinates of Artemis II can be precisely calculated using the JPL Horizons Web App at: ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/horizons/app... The resulting RA & Dec values can then be used to direct a computer-controlled telescope to point at the position of Artemis at a specific time.

The Artemis crew practiced proximity operations, manoeuvring Orion near and docking with the ICPS to inform future missions. Upon completion of the test, Orion performed a departure burn pulling away from the ICPS to continue its mission.

NOT ONE, BUT TWO | Further examination of my Artemis II images reveal not one but two objects in motion. The two objects are the crewed Orion spacecraft capsule (3.3m x 5.0m) and the larger (hence brighter) Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage (13.7m x 5.1m). 🔭

Artemis II appears as a short streak in this 30 second image taken 12 hours ago at 15:35 UT (2 April 2026). JPL Horizons was used to compute the position of the spacecraft every few minutes, thus enabling it to be found using plate solving. 🔭

Artemis II imaged a few minutes ago from my Bortle 7 backyard in southern Australia. The 29x30sec Live Stack shows a distinct pattern of brightening and dimming as the Orion spacecraft headed into a Sagittarius star cloud (M20 & M8 nearby). The Full Moon added to the imaging challenge. 🔭

During totality, when the Moon is fully within the Earth’s shadow, the Moon will appear red-orange in colour. This is the colour of all the sunsets and sunrises in Earth’s atmosphere being projected onto the Moon's Earth-facing side.

The ringed-planet Saturn is in a close conjunction with Neptune at the moment. The planetary pairing will be located in the evening sky for several days, but requires a low-power telescope to view both planets at the same time. Good luck! 🔭
