Wisconsin Democrats are getting drunk as hell tonight
It's a legit joke when it comes to dumb stuff Trump does like tariffs, but this is war and it's an unholy mess
My story is still online, although for whatever reason without my byline. And certainly some of what seemed to be the mood of the times got upended by subsequent events. But here it is anyway.

Yes, thank you. The city of Waukesha is certainly affected by the exurban politics of the area, but it's still a small city with a different demography than its surroundings.
If you’re looking for a bellwether mayoral election to read tea leaves about the 2026 midterms, this one very likely tells you far more than that other one that has dominated the deeply parochial National Conversation™️ from the Coastal Elites over the last 6 months 👀
If the Coastal Elites treated both parties equally, tomorrow’s NYT would look like 👇 & Ezra Douthglesias would be writing takes & hosting podcasts about how the GOP must urgently reach out to Midwest Real Folkz with an Abundance of Moderate Popularism. Dollars to donuts, we won’t see that tomorrow.

My feed is basically 20% posts saying no one will even notice what's happening in Wisconsin tonight and 80% posts saying WAUKESHA!!!!

The also more important point is that municipal elections, even with stated parties, tend to not follow nationwide trends.
“Tactic”?
“Off-ramp”?
Don’t. Print. Lies. In. The. Newspapers.
Journalism, what is it, exactly?

A little history... Waukesha had a (Dem aligned - the city council and mayoral races in Wisconsin are nominally nonpartisan) mayor about 20 years ago, Larry Nelson. (I profiled him for Milwaukee Magazine in 2007.) The city has always been much less Republican than the rest of the county.
UPDATE FROM WAUKESHA: ALICIA HALVENSLEBEN LEADS WITH 100% REPORTING
Can Democrats also flip the mayoral election in Waukesha, the biggest city in the conservative Waukesha County?
Their candidate is up 4% with 79% reporting.
This is the tight Wisconsin election to watch right now.

There has never been a moment in history when "just open up new fields" has actually worked to solve the root problem here
I read the piece. I admire your work! But I think it's misleading at best to run a photo of Justice Bradley, who is NOT running. How about topping the piece a photo of both candidates? Or a beauty shot of the court? Or, ya know, someone who isn't politically irrelevant at this point?
Head shots of Maria Lazar and Chris Taylor, who are candidates for a seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Image is from WisPolitics.com.
For the record, the photo here is of Justice Rebecca Bradley. She is retiring. She is NOT running; hence the election.
Here are the people who ARE running; thank you wispolitics.com.

Something I don't think the UK boasts about enough - and a great rebuttal to Reform and the Tories' anti-net zero propaganda:
The UK is home to 7 out of the top 10 biggest offshore wind farms in the world. 10 of the top 20. And 6 in 10 of the largest ones in the world currently under construction.
Mamdani is not just filling the potholes with the crew. He's creating a visual and personal reminder of the dignity inherent in all of these anonymous government jobs.
Kind of a random question, but do you follow Cal Newport's writing and podcasting on AI and it uses as well as the hype (both positive and negative) and if you do, what do you think?
The NYT has obtained fleeting video footage of the Jan. 14 incident in Minneapolis during which an ICE agent shot a fleeing Venezuelan immigrant and then claimed he had been attacked.
