Future-proofing travel in a volatile world How the current global situation can help us rethink how we travel

It takes 500 barrels of oil to fly to LA, and roughly 0 to take the train to Europe.

Changing your travel habits is about more than avoiding climate collapse; it's about the petro-states not holding you over a barrel.

Humans caused this by not slamming the breaks on the burning of fossil fuels!

Where is the urgency? Where are the emergency measures?

From the latest UNEP emissions gap report:

"To date, no NDCs have set targets to reduce oil and gas production or phase out inefficient fossil fuel subsidies"

European power prices are split since the US-Iran conflict. Gas-reliant markets like Italy and Ireland have seen high prices (€140/MWh) while renewable rich regions including Spain, Portugal and Sweden see far lower prices (€40/MWh).

These are average wholesale daily prices (8am to 8pm).

How you know we are in truly unprecendented, unfathomable and historic times: Germans are buying more EVs than petrol cars

Satellite view of a new shopping mall in Plettenberg Bay, South Africa showing the roof area covered in solar panels.

Today in South Africa almost all new builds look like this - every roof carrying as many solar panels as it can!

The lesson in all this? There are now real alternatives to fossil energy.

We have the technology we should just need to use it!

This is fossil fuel “demand destruction” in action

South Africa's imports of solar cells, modules & panels

2022: US$ 345 million (R5.6 billion)
2023: US$ 947 million (R17.5 billion)

South Africa's imports of solar cells, modules & panels 2022: US$ 345 million (R5.6 billion) 2023: US$ 947 million (R17.5 billion)

Almost everyone who could afford to do so scrambled to switch to solar energy!

We are a very sunny country.

Look what happened to solar tech imports during this period.

Let me share an interesting story from South Africa. In 2023 we had a severe electricity crisis. With daily scheduled blackouts.

It was intense and very disruptive.

Then something interesting happened.

RONI highlighted for the 2015/16 El Niño event showing the NDJ value at 2.4°C

I know it is only early April as you mentioned so there is that - but this forecast seems to put this upcoming event in the same range as as 2015/16 where RONI peaked at 2.4°C?

Would this be a reasonable assumption at this point?

I've updated my El Niño forecast plume with the latest April data (ECMWF, NMME, CFSv2, Canadian models). Its now looking like it might end up giving 2015/2016 a run for its money in terms of strength, with a peak of ~2.6C in the ENSO3.4 region by end of year: dashboard.theclimate...

UK BEV sales basically on trend. March is a very big month, so higher numbers for all categories, but as a share: on trend. The required target for the year is 33% BEV share, so that's going to be a push.

The Total Wreckage of Trump’s Energy Policy The U.S. and Israel’s war of choice has already destroyed many things, including the president’s domestic energy strategy.

The Iran War has broken the bargain that Trump promised to strike between American consumers and the oil industry — and its left his energy policy dead in the water. I wrote about it for @heatmap.news: heatmap.news/energy/trump...
