People from our world end up in a mystical world and hijinx ensue … on a made-for-tv budget, in 1983.

What could go wrong?

Have just discovered #SirAlecGuinness in #FatherBrown (AKA #TheDetective). It’s quite a fun, offbeat detective movie and quite different from any other I’ve seen. (Haven’t seen the 2013 TV show yet.)

In honor of the #Artemis mission to the moon, I made this quick image during lunch today. It was honestly directly inspired by #CleanElvis by #DanReeder. #VintageSci-fi #ClassicSci-fi

Lovely little Madonna & Child, c. 1290, by Cimabue of Florence. He was all the rage before Giotto came along (sez Dante), & today is his day.

I was going through some older images this morning and came across this one. I always felt like something was missing so I gave her a bag. #springcleaning

#HumphreyBogart gives an incredible, nuanced performance #InaLonelyPlace It’s #filmnoir that brilliantly subverts the audience expectations. I went into this blind, which made it all the more enjoyable.

Right now, I’m working 14 hour days, 6 days a week and with the very little time I have to create, I keep coming back to this family of characters. #PunkRockGirl

Finally got around to watching #Juno it’s been on my watchlist since it came out and somehow fell through the cracks. Funny seeing Jason Bateman and Michael Sarah, in this, considering their roles in Arrested Development.

I’m sorry I didn’t watch this sooner. It was brilliant.

The gritty realism of this age of sci-fi has never been topped. Everything is rough and wet and wonderfully imperfect. #BladeRunner

#BorisKarloff and a young #JackNicholson star in this #GothicHorror. Partly directed by #FrancisFordCoppola and #RogerCorman

Not gonna lie, this is a slog and a half of a movie. It’s mostly interesting because of such great talent at such an early, rough stage in their development.

Today is the feast day of the Annunciation so let's just start right off with Simone Martini's golden Gothic masterpiece of 1333.

Happily mesmerized my son with #2001 a Space Odyssey. It’s such a wonderful experience. Whatever you think it’s going to be as you go along, it isn’t. It constantly subverts your expectations in the most fascinating ways.

Tricked my son into watching a #WesAnderson film by simply putting on #IsleofDogs. It was odd for us because he speaks Japanese and I don’t so we had different reactions as the film progressed.

#TheGiantClaw was awful. A giant muppet bird “the size of a battleship” wreaks havoc. The effects are the worst I’ve ever seen. This flick is best paired with a few friends and a LOT of alcohol. #VintageSci-Fi

With my one day off I’m binge watching tons of bad old B movies like #theBrainfromPlanetAuros. I’ve seen this once before and it’s … odd. It’s a bit like a cross between Hardy Boys adventure (Mystery Mountain!) and an issue of Strange Tales. The “creature” alone was interesting. #Vintagesci-fi

#Frankenstein’sDaughter (1958) was bad. A descendent of Dr. Frankenstein calling himself Frank is running experiments … you know what happens. The only “fun” thing was seeing #FelixLocher, who I randomly remember from an episode of #TOS.

#VintageSci-fi #NightoftheBloodBeast is an early #RogerCoreman B-movie with some surprisingly good points. It’s rough, don’t get me wrong, but it has the male pregnancy horror of Alien and a morally vague ending where you’re not quite sure who was actually right.

#VintageSci-fi The Flame Barrier 1958 is ANOTHER slog through the jungle flick in search of an alien monster with ties to satellites.

A surprise: the use of a solar panel. The first ones were invented in ‘56 and used on the Vanguard 1 satellite in ‘58. So this movie would have felt very modern.

For a 1959 B movie, the atomic submarine is pretty fun. The dialogue is awful, and the miniature effects look like toys. But for me, this is the kind of goofball story I would’ve imagined when I was a kid.

(I was into submarines.)

I don’t share a lot of personal blobs on here but this one was special.

I’m now the father of a teenager. This guy was the best kid that ever was. I can’t wait to see what he does next. #Goonies #NeverSayDie

Oof. #MonsterFromGreenHell is a slog. Literally. Lots of the movie is slogging through jungle. It has its moments though: the opening nicely contrasts the worlds of cowboys and rockets. Plus a very surprising Wizard of Oz like ending where black and white suddenly give way to explosions of color.

#FlighttoMars is a 1951 sci-fi flick that sees humans crash landing on Mars only to discover all the same complications they thought they left behind on Earth.

Contemporary reviews were not too kind, but 75 years later, I tend to agree, except to say it has taken on a bit of patina-like charm.
