pen and ink drawing, in process, of Shin Godzilla. His mouth is open wide and he's belching nuclear fire. A dip pen, brush, and ink pot sit atop the paper with the unfinished illustration.
Fun commission to rework my digital Shin Godzilla from a couple weeks ago in traditional pen and ink. Really enjoying rethinking some of the hatchwork and shadow placement.

glad to hear it, Matt. I rewatched it and think it's probably my second favorite Godzilla movie right behind Minus One.
close up digital drawing of Shin Godzilla with text overlay that says "Talking About Shin Godzilla and Trying Some New Digital Brushes."
Finally saw Shin Godzilla! Tried out a couple more of those new digital brushes in this week's video.

Thanks a lot, doc!

Illustration of Frankenstein's Monster standing behind the Bride of Frankenstein with his hand on her shoulder. Image is sliced diagonally into three stages of process: pencils, inks, and wash.
Working on this for a video later this month, but here's a process shot in the meantime to help celebrate #Frankenbruary.
I was not prepared.
Hey @mattnelsonart.bsky.social , Michelle and I are finally watching Shin Godzilla. Good lord, this monster is unreal.
A very happy "You are not required to come in for jury duty" day to all who celebrate.
I know it's someone's treasured, childhood toy.....but I'm not letting my feet hang over the edge of the mattress tonight just in case he's lurking under the bed.

The restored version did little to assuage my terror.

Thought I'd relax before bedtime with some episodes of The Repair Shop.
Now I'm hiding under the blanket with the lights on.

I like the durable nature of Apoxie Sculpt once it's cured. I dropped a figure from about five feet onto a hard floor and it didn't break. But the race against time is what I dislike about those 2-part resin clays. I'm looking into different brands to see if I can find one that fits my workflow.
It's my preferred polymer clay at this point, Matt. The flexibility isn't a problem (when it's a thicker, bulky shape the 'flexibility' is really more 'durability.' I use acrylics to paint it and they seem to stick. If you're going to airbrush, I'd 'prime' it with a layer of flat acrylic first.

First sculpt of the new year. Working on working small.
9 grid square showing some of the art projects we completed at Long Lost Friend Studio in 2025. Clockwise from top left: Bride of Frankenstein diorama, Monkey comic page, Thing mask, Great Pumpkin diorama, Krampus comic cover, Tarman wooden sculpture, Super Mario felted diorama, Linus and Sally sculpture. Center square is us.
Just got the prints back from the Olan Mills in Hades!
This year we sculpted in clay, wool, foam, and wood...and illustrated in inks, watercolors, colored pencils, and digitally.
A pretty good year. Hope next year's even better.
Happy New Year!

It's actually a vintage toy from the 1960s/70s. It's filled with two colors of sand that, when you rotate or flip the toy in your hands, will create random designs (think sea scapes, mountain rangers, cosmic space scenes....kind of an imagination toy). I believe it's called a Magic Window.

good gift. 10/10. no notes.
four different Grinch illustrations in various stages of completion: pencils, ink lines, ink wash, and fully watercolored. Images sit on a desktop near a bottle of ink and some dip pens.
Some friends got handmade Grinch cards this holiday.
Take that, Hallmark and American Greetings.

Needle felted figures in a small town back alley diorama, Ma Otter kicks Chuck, the River Bottom bully, as he writhes on the sidewalk. Emmet, launching himself from something off-camera, sails through the air with the intent of landing squarely on the helpless Chuck
Needle felted figures in a small town back alley diorama, Ma Otter lifts Chuck, the River Bottom bully, off the ground one last time to perform a piledriver, while Emmet Otter stands aside, arms crossed defiantly, and wearing Chuck's sunglasses in a final act of humiliation.
At this festive time of year, let's not forget the alternate timeline where Emmet Otter and Ma went ham on Chuck, that loud mouth bully from River Bottom.

Good point, Ray. No need for me to wait for company to eat this entire bag of chips. Why, that would almost seem like putting on airs.
I believe the bag is tiny. Michelle is telling me I have giant meat hooks. We may never know the truth.
