Big food and drink city, I’ve got some spots
It’s been so dumb lately lol, I trust it even less than I normally do
I think @grain.social has the juice. It’s so refreshing to have a timeline that allows you to see new posts, and when you’re done, you can just go about your day. No engagement algorithm, just awesome photos in a clean app. 👏👏
oh my mistake, you're looking for a reply — that's not available atm, I'll add this to the roadmap for search improvements
y'all are crushing
`mentions:<handle>` should work for ya
considering they've had a decade+ to do this, it's hard not to think this might be a reaction to @npmx.dev 🚀
It's a simple binary search, so typically fairly performant in most cases. We realize there's a lot more to do here, but baby steps 🙏
Code lives here github.com/bluesky-soci...
This compression step happens in the client. So say you upload a v large image with a lot of detail, we'll try to compress down until we reach 25% quality, then start decreasing resolution by 20% (and repeating compression from the top) until we get under the byte limit.
Those GIFs actually come from tenor.com, so it's whatever was uploaded to their service
Yeah good shout. Atm we actually compress to `n` quality level and then resize if it's still overweight and doesn't meet a min quality threshold. So we won't destroy the quality just to meet the max resolution. That's where the byte size increase comes in.
To be clear, we don't intend to stop at 2 MB. We're just taking this slow to assess the impact on our image moderation systems.
We can't provide a timeline for further increases, but know that we are working on it 🙏
Related to this, we've been slowly rolling out a higher resolution limit for our image uploads, from 2000px^2 to 4000px^2.
Until the below image size increase rolls out (soon), image sizes are still capped at 1 MB, so FYI you won't see immediate quality increase in all cases just yet.
But yeah, as Surfdude said, it's also that it gives us more flexibility in the future.
Existing image embeds won't stop working or anything, but the Bluesky app would eventually stop creating posts using the old embed type and we'd recommend the ecosystem to do the same.
Yeah it's mostly a backwards compat thing — lexicon doesn't provide nice off-ramps when changing values like `maxLength`. If we simply increased the `maxLength` on existing embeds, many downstream consumers would break because they'd be assuming a max of 4 images.
Should be fixed in the next release, coming ~tomorrow ish
Totally separate. This would be a replacement of the existing image embed.
devs working with bsky image embeds:
we are planning to bump the image embed blob max size from 1 MByte to 2 MByte. first in the lexicon schema, and then in the Bluesky Social app.
more about impacts, and what this means in terms of lexicon evolution, in this github discussion
Ugh thanks
Hehe, unfortunately no
Heh yeah easy to assume a fluke. Seems that selecting using the file picker works fine.
What device/version are you on?
Anyone seeing images getting squished if they _paste_ them into the post composer here in Bluesky?
Like this one 🤔
this would have taken a master Renaissance painter a year
this captures it perfectly
pleasure to meet and talk with @laurenshof.online in person
v interesting
The Official Announcement ™️
i'm super stoked about this. big thanks to everyone involved!
if you want a say in the long term design of atproto, this is the place! hop in the mailing list and start participating. we'll be sending some messages in there soon
i bet 'alltrails' is the next thing to be rebuilt on atproto if it hasn't already
stranded in downtown Minneapolis for a night! seeking food and drink recs if you have ‘em
imo if atproto can make a compelling alternative to youtube it would be way bigger than bluesky, @stream.place's vod jam feels like the start of something that could be huge, which is why i am so excited about it
