Final takes were then recorded live to tape with effects and additional elements. The long-form mix was done in the same way.

Focusing on the textural aspects as much as compositional, also including field recordings I’ve made in the recent months. These create a sense of time and location that is very personal, adding to the ephemeral nature of things along with their sonic patterns.

Magnetic tape shaping and natural compression; digital artefacts and aliasing; analogue filtering, saturation and mixing; parallel effect chains, delays, springs, valves and modulation - all adding their unique imprint. Deepening subs, extending highs, adding harmonics.

Freeform explorations, either on a modular system or other instruments, were then sampled, re-sampled, recorded to various tape machines again and again. Old equipment has a certain quality - early samplers and reel-to-reels have a character that has always been a part of the sound palette I love.

The tracks feel transitional, and I’ll likely understand them more as time goes on. It’s music for deep-listening.

where qd32 in your hands was outward looking, thoughts persist is introspective.

This album didn’t have a concept as the starting point, was more about making music with an open mind and letting things follow their own course.
