Your essay on decolonize your lust gets more specific re: what Gustavo Perez Firmat (born in Cuba, raised in Miami, FL, USA) writes in the poem below. I first read it as the epigraph of Junot Diaz's 'Drown,' whose translation is titled 'Negocios.'

Dominican American Julia Alvarez's novel, how the garcia girls lost their accent, I believe has that scene where someone from the home country asks the main character what language she loves in.
White mug with navy blue color on the inside, with different cultural variations of the Akan name, Afia, colorfully designed on it.

Oh that would be an interesting class because of all that this it is connected to. I’d especially love to find out what people think about the ways in which those not very attached to the Global North(indigenes who simply can’t speak English, etc) have circumvented this looming issue.
Reading this against something J Alvarez wrote about loving in Spanish v English. Such a good read; def trying to find a way to teach this as I debate which course to teach it in.
I love this essay. It does an interesting job of linking the common problem of the loss of language for sex in indigenous [African] languages—as a result of colonialism and neocolonialism—to the extinction of said indigenous languages.

The Evè expression, Tso, and the isiXhosa expression, Tjo, are pronounced similarly and used in very Similar ways!
While both languages are absolutely unrelated, Tjo and Tso are still used to express surprise, shock and sometimes displeasure.
This week we come across two words, pronounced similarly, that are used culturally in both Eʋè and Xhosa to express similar emotions. We love this discovery a lot because there is such a wide gap between these two languages but they still manage to share similarity in some way 💕
