New El Niño forecast just dropped and it’s a whopper! Maybe the strongest on record. The European model seasonal forecast shows record Aug-Oct tropical Pacific sea surface temperature warmth at 2-3°C above normal (~ +5°F) in the central-east Pacific. The record for Aug-Oct is +2.2°C in 2015… 1/
The persistence of this WWB for the next week or so will continue to shunt the WPAC warm pool east and further signals the atmosphere’s rapid transition toward El Niño this spring.
An impressive westerly wind burst has commenced, aided by intensifying TC Maila in the SWPAC.
A mirrored TC in the NWPAC could further enhance this burst in the coming days.
WWBs like these are strong indications for strong/super El Niño development in the summer and fall.
NZ is also a problem soon
Cyclone #Vaianu ( #31P) has wobbled a bit east during the past few hours, and that makes me more concerned about wind impacts in #Fiji, namely the Mamanuca Islands (home of #Survivor) and Viti Levu. These areas could see sustained storm-force winds and heavy rain during the next 12-18 hrs.

Maila is starting to level off but will impact PNG's Milne Bay Province w/hurricane force winds by midweek. TC impacts are rare there.
Vaianu will pass west of #Fiji and SW of #Tonga but could bring gale force winds.
