After our “community standards violation” for asking people to message brands to speak out against the dismantling of the Forest Service, we had a team work all weekend knocking out a website for the same purpose. It’ll be live in a few hours.
‘High functioning’, ‘Asperger’s, ‘low functioning’, ‘profound’.
None of these labels address our specific needs… and they all come with assumptions about what we are/not capable of.

Talking about specific support needs is way more helpful.
Functional labels are lazy ways to make snap assumptions about a person’s needs… but they don’t always reflect a person’s reality… but more often the reality of people observing that person…
Ex: when I was diagnosed and asked for adjustments in the workplace my boss told me I didn’t need support’ because I was ‘high functioning’ - so I had to leave a job that would have went way below my skill levels had I actually been properly supported.
Functioning labels can and often do causes confusion…
People often use the label ‘high functioning’ to deny support…

It’s not something we can ‘recover from’ or ‘grow out of’ or that can be acquired.

It is NOT a ‘brain injury’ (though brain injuries can appear similar to those observing from the outside).

It’s been a while since I’ve participated in ‘Autism Month.‘ Something about it never sat right with me...
Actually, there are a lot of things about ‘Autism Month‘ that don’t sit right with me, personally, as one Autistic person - one being that I am Autistic every day, not just in April.
I have said it many times over the years… and it’s still true that Autism is STILL under identified NOT over identified.
It may seem to some people as if suddenly there are more Autistic People than ever.
Now, here’s the hard part for some people, I don’t believe any human is a tragedy… even if we need extensive support… I believe it’s tragic our society doesn’t support those who have complex needs or the families who care for them…

Autism is NOT a tragedy.
However, people’s opinions about Autistic People’s existence IS extremely tragic.

Autistic people can have good or bad mental health, just like non-autistic people can.
My mental health is great, currently… but I’ve also experienced poor mental health at multiple times in my life.
