I love this article. It hammers home how simple placeholder art is a part of the iterative development process, and is key to allowing each discipline creative influence.
When devs use AI, they are cutting other artists out of the creative process, often intentionally, and producing worse stories.

the virality and imitation of Mouse PI seems to be an indication that we are descending into another layer of signifiers. i saw a steam early access survival game yesterday that looked pretty much conventional except for the HUD and enemies being ripped straight out of Mouse PI.
oh yeah also probably Bendy and the Ink Machine is in the mix somewhere. either way we're definitely approaching the sign and signifier stage where the style is associated with its imitators just as much as the original works.
speaking from observation and not experience, but i think cuphead pilled a disproportionate number of zoomer gamers on rubber hose animation at a formative time for their gaming taste.

I just backed this, besides wanting to support Australian journalism I think the team is burying the most exciting part in the Kickstarter description.
Issue 1 will contain new information about the long defunct Sega World Sydney... That's got me hook, line. and sinker.
Anecdotally, all of the biggest CRT-heads I know are my age or younger.
Hell, I'm an example of this trend, most of the inspirations for YHVH are older than I am. I got into retro gaming partly because that's what my crappy laptop could handle for most of my life, GOG was a big part of that.

I think there are definitely lots of influential games for me that are almost subconscious in their influence. I also draw lots of inspiration from things that aren't games. So this isn't a complete list, just the ones that stick out as games I find myself returning to for inspiration.
Most influential games on my design style is an interesting question. Here's mine, as far as I can recall them.
