If you live in California, you have probably been getting spammed a lot lately on multiple channels about a ballot initiative to “protect retirement from new taxes” or another one pushing “spending transparency”.
You will be perhaps unsurprised to learn that these […]

[Last song (for today anyway) is the Washington Breakdown . CW for fat-shaming of JP Morgan.]
I see a lot of people on here who think that thinking both major US political parties are the same is a recent phenomenon. This song was written 85 years ago:
Wendell Wilkie and Franklin D

We knew, but the proof is nice.
"Apple just proved that AI models cannot do math. Not advanced math. Grade school math. The kind a 10-year-old solves"
The guess-the-next-words machines don’t actually understand anything.

And then there's The Ballad of October 16.[1]
Oh, Franklin Roosevelt told the people how he felt
We damned near believed what he said
He said, "I hate war, and so does Eleanor
But we won't be safe till everybody's dead"
[1] I'm not sure what the date means. The bill was passed by Congress and […]
World War Two was the archetypal good war. And ask any liberal, FDR was the archetypal good president. But don't ask Millard Lampell, Lee Hays, Pete Seeger, and Woody Guthrie -- The Almanac Singers.[1] They released Songs for John Doe[2] in 1941 and it's full of anti-draft, anti-war, anti-FDR […]

To log into one Outlook may be regarded as a tragedy, but logging into two looks like carelessness.

Here are Sally Wainwright and the main actors talking about the show.

I just finished Riot Women and it was just about perfect! Five menopausal women form a punk band and write angry songs about their lives. Sally Wainwright's scripts are tragic and hilarious, the acting is excellent. There's nothing about this show I didn't love. And it passes the Bechdel test […]
I drive 25.1 miles to work, about 20 of that on the freeway. There are 9 stoplights in the other 5.1 miles. This morning every single one of them was green when I got to it. Time for some Aloe Blacc!
Something special happened today
I got green lights all the way
With no big red sign to stop me […]
Image of an official Kuwaiti ID card released by Nasir Security today. I've reacted all PII.
Kuwait Ministry of the Interior was hacked by Nasir Security. They only released a few images today but they're threatening to release much more if the Kuwaiti government continues its cooperation with the US and Israel. Onion link below.

The only thing that I really miss about Twitter is the critical mass of local Los Angeles comrades over there so what a treat to find this video on fedi of the great Adam Smith serenading the LAPD on the Metro!
He's not on Twitter […]

The new marronage.
A lot of people on here saying that Trump's not at Walter Reed because there's no way he could have gotten there without a big spectacle and everybody noticing. But what if Gregg Phillips teleported him in?!

The famous meme graph that shows every bad thing about America being due to Ronald Reagan, but modified for accuracy. The top caption says "Every graph about the Americas." The bottom caption says "some metric." To the left of the graph there are horizontal green and red lines with the green one on top. The key at the bottom says that the green line represents "good thing" and the red line represents "bad thing." In the middle of the graph is a vertical dotted line labelled "October 12, 1492" Just to the right of the vertical dotted line the red and the green lines cross over one another, with the green line ending up at the bottom and the red line ending up at the top.
This toot is in lieu of me reply-guying every time someone posts the "Ronald Reagan" version of this graph.

Now do LAPD! They routinely and intentionally violate the California Public Records Act. It's next to impossible to get any useful information out of them. Sadly some kind of hack is the only way we're ever going to know what's going […]

But how else will capitalists force people to pay for air, which seems to be the last thing necessary to support life that they haven't figured out how to charge people for?

Screenshot of five equations produced by LaTex. The TeX code follows, which is the best way I can think to describe this: \documentclass{article} \begin{document} $$f(x)=x\ln(x+3)$$ $$f^{\prime}(x)=\ln(x+3) + \frac{x}{x+3}$$ $$f^{\prime}(x)=\frac{(x+3)\ln(x+3) + x}{x+3}$$ $$(x+3)\ln(x+3) + x =0$$ $$x=???$$ \end{document}
The other day I had a fairly popular post talking about how mathematicians easily and often admit that they don't know things or don't understand things. Today at work a real-life example came up!

This is interesting. This bot grabs lyrics from BobDylan.com but these lyrics are different from the album version, which has:

Zoning laws do function like this -- they increase car dependence. But that's not all they do. Laws are tools, and tools only very rarely have just one capability. Tools created to solve one problem are often repurposed to solve […]

I'm very happy with fastmail too, although it's paid. I have multiple domains and can create arbitrary usernames and subdomains for them easily and also use fastmail's large collection of domains. Also it allows custom sieve scripts for advanced handling.
In honor of Artemis II, what is your favorite space- or space travel-related song?
I'll toss out one favorite:
[Ayreon -- To The Quasar](ww.youtube.com/watch?v=MwkLyw7VKrE)
@Chip_Unicorn
Definitely Mr. Spaceman by the Holy Modal Rounders, attached here for your listening pleasure.
After you listen you'll get why I'm still laughing 40 years after some guy told me he could sign ASL along with any song. This one beat him though!
The #ThursdayFiveList theme is songs with an #AlliterativeTitle and why not the artists too??
