Tonight's #AlphabettiDischetti

Bjork - Debut

An album that just gets better with age. So many different styles: Electro, Trip Hop, House, yet all the songs are completely unique.

What other artist has a song where they essentially step outside for a breather mid-song.

Meat Loaf - Dead Ringer

Random charity shop purchase that didn't really work out. A few of the tracks are pretty good, especially the title track, but as a follow up to Bat out of Hell, this is really quite poor.

Lunchtime #AlphabettiDischetti Also continues my Sheffield Synth Pop journey.

The Human League - Dare!

Very much a high point of the genre. Brilliantly straddles both the band's early Avant work and their new pop friendly sound.

Tonight's #AlphabettiDischetti

John Parish and PJ Harvey - Dance Hall at Louse Point.

Criminally overlooked by some Harvey fans but great for a completist like me. This is eclectic and experimental even by the standards of one of music's great re-inventers.

Florence + the Machine - Dance Fever

Someone odd 3 sided LP from a somewhat odd act. Feels like a concept piece and is stronger for it. An artist enjoying experimenting with themes.

Echo and the Bunnymen - Crocodile

Wonderfully moody debut from a band that help define the brooding scene of the '80s.

Saturday morning #AlphabettiDischetti

Suede - Coming Up

Great album in its own right but more importantly my gateway into Suede. I soon discovered that their back catalogue was even better.
Still great to this day, Antidepressants was one of my AOTY for 2025.

Norah Jones - Come away with me

One of my go to chill out albums. Beautiful voice that suits this laid back lounge music style perfectly.

Today's #AlphabettiDischetti

Richard Hawley - Coles Corner

Lovely way to unwind after a long day at work. Laid back and slow tempo. Brilliantly put together album that was very different to everything else at the time.

And named for a famous local landmark to boot.

R.E.M. - Chronic Town

My only picture disc. I'm increasingly into early R.E.M. so this was a no brainer.
Really good debut EP. Great precursor to one of the all time greatest debut albums.

Florence + the machine - Ceremonials

An artist I've always seemed to enjoy more than the critics. Not musically groundbreaking, but a strong voice and catchy songs.
Bloody weird live experience though. Like a cult.

Last night's #AlphabettiDischetti

Hole - Celebrity Skin

As a teen, it felt like I was the only one I knew that was into hole. People knew Courtney Love but not her music. This album changed that. Seemed like more of a mainstream hit in the UK. Still great despite the shift.

Caught Beneath the Landslide

Don't usually do compilations, but this double album of rarities, covers, and remixes from Britpop bands is a lot of fun.Worth considering if you can pick it up for £15 like me.

Today's #AlphabettiDischetti

Nick Cave & Warren Ellis - Carnage

Masterpiece. Cave's 4th successive 90+ metacritic album. Good to see Ellis getting equal billing in this side project; is musical influence on Cave's peerless run over the last decade can't be overlooked.

Katie Melua - Call off the search

Not groundbreaking but a lovely little album. A nice variety of styles which are all a great vehicle for her voice.

This was nearly missed off my #AlphabettiDischetti B list because of the ellipses.

Phil Collins - ...But Seriously

A long way from my 1989 holy trinity (Disintegration, Stone Rose, 3 Feet High...) but at the time, this was what my parents were actually playing.

Red Hot Chilli Peppers - By the way

I've a savant-like habit of remembering times and places by the music I was listening to at the time. Mel mocks me for it. Daren't admit that this album reminds me of the old Safeway in Lincoln.

Tonight's #AlphabettiDischetti

Brewing up with Billy Bragg

His first full length album carries on where Life's a Riot left off. Short, sharp and stripped back songs about politics and love.

Witty, and essential to this day.

Today's #5DebutAlbums8589 choice is pulling double duty as it is also next up for my #AlphabettiDischetti.

Nirvana - Bleach

Didn't really make a dint at the time, only picking up sales after the success of Nevermind, but the quality is there. Grunge, but more accessible.

Simon and Garfunkel - Bridge over troubled water.

Stone cold classic. Many great songs but the title track especially stands out. What a way for the duo to bow out.

Great debut from a once great band.

The sleeve of my copy is rather dog-eared, but the disc still sounds great.

Massive Attack - Blue Lines

Think I'll forever feel guilty not putting this on my debut albums 90-94 list but it was such a tough list.
Make no mistake though, it is a vitally important genre defining album.

Placebo - Black Market Music

Rarely has an album grown on me like this. When I first bought this 25 years ago I really didn't like it. Can't even remember why, just didn't click

But all these years later, it has become one of my favourite Placebo albums.

Jarv Is - Beyond the Pale

Cocker's best non-Pulp work. Always loved Cocker's grimy sexy alter ego on some songs and it comes out in spades in this work, even when he's singing about whales.

James - Be opened by the wonderful

Absolutely beautiful orchestrated career retrospective. Not a one off concert but a properly produced studio album.

The arrangements are gorgeous, so much effort has gone into the rewrites.

Tonight's #AlphabettiDischetti
Oasis - Be here now.

Bought this with nostalgic rose-tinted glasses but to be honest this hasn't aged well. A few good songs, but it is bloated by some sub par, self indulgent tracks.

If this was a random band, it wouldn't be remembered.

Tonight's #AlphabettiDischetti

Meat Loaf - Bat out of hell

One of those albums that is part of the essential vinyl starter pack, and at 43 million copies sold it isn't hard to find. A failed musical score that instead made a killer album. The rest is history.

Brian May -Back to the light

Bit of a nostalgia buy this one. My Dad had it on CD so when it was £9 new I snapped it up.
A bit feast or famine. The strong songs are really good, but the rest is basic filler. Worth an annual revisit though.

Today's #AlphabettiDischetti:

Amy Winehouse - Back to Black

Great album that essentially opened up a new avenue for female British soul singers that wasn't there before.

Amazing voice and talent. Still seems to be the crowning achievement of the genre.
