Winter landscape painting with a frozen river winding through a snowy foreground, dark brushy vegetation along the banks, a leafless tree on the right, and a broad blue-gray sky streaked with expressive brushstrokes. Warm yellow light glows low on the horizon and reflects faintly on the ice, contrasting with the cool winter tones.
It snowed the day after Christmas. The snow was thick and difficult to traverse, making it a strenuous exercise, but as a reward we got a peek of the sun setting over the trail as we headed back to the park entrance.

A "Do Not Enter" sign sits on the right upper portion of the scene, just below a pair of bright street lights. This one was tricky, but fun to try.
This morning's #casein practice #painting was chosen by my kid who wanted something more complicated, so here it is! Finding the right dark colors without using black or getting too many whites in my darks took some discipline. I hope I got close, though I know there are things I'd fix.
A bit of ocean scenery. Grayish clouds above a grayish ocean. A circle created by the shoreline and some stones that rise above the water surround a central pillar. In the foreground grass complements the curve. overall, this one feels a bit washed out, but it's practice.
Another morning #casein #painting practice. This time, Looking Away From a Lighthouse in Oregon. I've not really done water all that much, so this is something I should work at more often. I feel I could have added more color to this one.
A chunky, boulder rests on a grass covered hill. There are small rocks to the left and a large mound on the right from which the boulder fell out of a long time ago. A small evergreen tree sits to the right of the boulder. In the distance there are trees and hill, and a river seems to carve its way through the landscape behind all of that. The front part of the scene is dark with shadow.
A large stump that suggests a rough hewn throne sits atop a small hill, surrounded by trees. everything is in shadow, except for the bright yellow green canopy of the trees in the upper half of the painting. A bright blue sky peaks through the canopy. I'm trying to get comfortable painting again but I'm still feeling very clumsy with my brush marks. Still, this is good practice.
Going through my photo roll of previous hikes to get some #casein #painting practice in while the weather isn't great and my time is short.
Painting on watercolor paper using casein paint: an old barn is painted over orange ink strokes giving it a glow effect. A large, barren tree towers just behind the barn. In the foreground are several small Christmas trees growing in their rows.
Painted in near-freezing weather with casein for the first time at a Christmas tree farm. I overlooked that my paint set did not include white, so I had to work transparently like watercolor mostly.

A vibrant abstract casein painting with a blue oval form in the center, a smaller irregular circle shape inside it that swirls with colors like dark gray, dark purple, deep red etc. The background is mostly bright orange, and stripes of dark red and dark gray on the right side of the painting. There is a lot of texture in many parts of the painting, especially with the lightest color: a tan that is just a bit darker than usual. Overall the contrast of the painting is low, making it look aged or weathered in appearance.

Another tree, this time deciduous, reaches into the light blue sky, half-lit by the dawn sun and towering over the shadow-cloaked houses below.
I've been enjoying practicing #painting in #casein with a limited palette by doing 1 hour sketches in the morning before everyone wakes up. The brown paper I'm using pushes me toward an oil-like, opaque approach, but I'm going to keep trying transparent as well.
