Title: “Thistle Trouble”
Zarnak the Unblinking had a plan. It was a terrible plan. But that had never stopped him before.
You see, Zarnak wasn’t like the other Spriggans. While his kin hoarded moonberries and muttered curses at moss, Zarnak wore high-tops, hoarded mixtapes, and had a deep emotional attachment to a chipped GameZorb cartridge called Spore Kart 3000.
“I’m going to the human world,” he declared one dewy morning, standing in the middle of the Rose Gate ruins in his oversized red shirt, which read “TR33D” in a font even the Ancient Glyphkeepers found confusing.
A butterfly passed him with more urgency than he possessed.
Zarnak was waiting for The Moment — the blink between dawnlight and midlight when the Realms synced. He didn’t know how he knew, only that the roses whispered it while he was napping in them last week.
Sure enough, the door cracked open. A shimmer. A hum. A smell not unlike burnt toast and teenage regret.
Zarnak stepped through.
And stepped directly onto a human lawn. A very well-kept lawn. With a sprinkler system.
Pshhht-tik-tik-tik-tik-pshhht.
A child screamed.
A teenager on a scooter dropped his Slurpee.
A corgi barked and peed simultaneously.
Zarnak blinked slowly. “Greetings, landfolk. I seek your ruler. Also, perhaps... a sandwich?”
Police were called. Zarnak tried to explain that he was on a diplomatic mission, but no one trusts diplomacy when it smells like compost and glows faintly purple.
Eventually, a very kind woman with too many cats gave him a hoodie, a granola bar, and pointed him toward the community college.
Zarnak enrolled in two art classes, one botany elective, and has been living in a garden shed behind the ceramics building ever since.
His mixtape? Now available on vinyl.
His sneaker brand? Underground cult favorite.
The roses? Still whispering.
But now they say,
"He made it. He actually made it."
