It’s worth a 5 minute walk west of the village car park in #Corbridge to see the Roman bridge stones which carried Dere Street over the river Tyne. The stones have been moved from their excavation site to better protect and display then.

A tiny rough-cast bronze figurine of Cupid, depicted as a young naked boy in an active standing pose. His left arm, cut off at the wrist, is raised, while his right stretches down and holds in its hand what appears to be a pair of dice. The figure's wieght is on its right leg (from which the foot is missing) with its left leg slightly raised behind. The figure's left wing (attached to its back) can just be glimpsed behind its head and left shoulder. Cupid's hair is long and descends from a distinct topknot. His gaze is slightly upward, fixed on something distant. The background is defocussed, but recognisable as a museum display, including the lower portion of a second standing figure, of a coppery hue, behind Cupid's left arm.

Heavily corroded Lorica Segmenta (armour popular in the Roman Army during the first few centuries of the Common Era) displayed on a metal support frame. The armour comprises several curved metal plates, protecting the left shoulder, chest, and midriff. The surface of each is rough and a rusty orange in colour; some greenish patches suggest the presence of copper or bronze in places. To the left of frame, a modern reconstruction completes the armour for the right side of the body, showing how it would have appeared when new, complete with leather straps holding the individual plates in position. The armour is thought to date to the reign of either Trajan or Hadrian.

For #RomanSiteSaturday, 3 pics of #Corbridge Roman settlement. The fort phases gave way to a town planned in the later 1/2 of 2nd C AD. Never quite completed, the town operated until at least the end of 4th C. It also retained a military presence in 2 military areas.

The steps leading into the strong room under the headquarters building in the west compound at #Corbridge Roman town. The room would have held the soldiers pay and savings. A building inscription of the 6th legion dated AD192-202 was found inside during excavation. #RIB1163
