An Atlantic sand fiddler crab in the sand. The crab is just to the right of a small hole in the ground. The shell, or carapace, is mostly white with a few black spots and also is pink in the center, which identifies it as a displaying male. The eyes are hard to see in this photo but are at the end of small stalks. The right claw is considerably larger than the left. It is a light brown with many small bumps on it. The legs are orange.

These little crabs are a great example of sexually dimorphic organisms, as only the males have a major claw alongside a normal sized claw. These big claws are an example of an exaggerated morphological trait that is used in sexual selection and for fighting off other male competition. However, this leaves them with only one good claw for feeding themselves, making them take twice as long to get their calories throughout the day.
