A bat the size of a small aircraft surprised me walking to my front door. Enjoying the fruits of the night. Silent, black. Brilliant.
I have watched them for years - they look so small flocking up high at dusk.
But - their wingspan is actually about 1 metre.

Little red flying foxes hanging high in casuarina trees. Mangrove trees at their base, a sole Lagunaria (native hibiscus) in front, power lines and blue sky above.
Here's a view of the flying foxes along the side of Stoney Creek. The colony has expanded to near its limits now without crossing the creek or roads, must be many thousands in there now.
