Traditional behavioral science nudges often change proximal but not distal health outcomes
One light-touch nudge to patients may not be sufficient to affect distal behaviors
• May require more intensive interventions, and/or nudges at multiple points in the behavior chain, incorporating EAST framework components as appropriate (Halpern, 2016)
Nudge to nurses affected distal outcome of most interest
• One heavier-handed nudge may be enough to tackle tough behaviors
Results aligned with observed disconnect between intentions and ultimate behaviors in nudge field studies (Saccardo et al., 2024)
• Perhaps intentions are better reflected in intermediate behaviors like scheduling but poorly predict distal behaviors like vaccination or appointment attendance

1. #Geisinger field experiments found improved #health often requires more than improved decisions (e.g., clicking links, scheduling appts).
