A close-up view of the Gabriel Icefall on the Gulkana Glacier in the Eastern Alaska Range, Alaska. The frame is filled entirely with heavily crevassed and fractured glacier ice, showing roughly 400 vertical feet of the icefall. The ice displays complex textures including folded horizontal striations representing annual accumulation layers compressed and deformed during glacial flow, deep crevasses, and towering seracs in the upper portion of the frame. Blue glacial ice is visible in the deeper crevasse walls at lower left. Rocky moraine debris is visible at the very bottom right of the frame.
The Gabriel Icefall on the Gulkana Glacier, Eastern Alaska Range. About 400 vertical feet of ice in this frame. The striations are annual accumulation layers that become folded during flow.

A soft blue sky with streaky thin clouds. Looking down from a spot at the top of a huge sloping field high on a mountainside across wooded foothills to a long narrow valley below. Most of the scene is bathed in sunshine. The lush green grass has been mowed not long ago. It is several inches high and sprinkled with dozens of white wildflowers. Nearby, pink clover blossoms predominate in a small slice of shade. A grassy track winds gracefully along the bottom edge of this field and then descends through two lower fields that appear to be pastures. They are divided by a fence line and a parallel line of trees a few feet away. There are glimpses of a few more distant fields, but most of the scene is covered with a forest split almost equally between evergreens and leafless hardwoods. The long valley is mostly wooded with strips of fields and a few buildings visible. Beyond that the blue green slopes of a long, forested mountain range rise hundreds of feet above the valley. Several rounded peaks are visible.
Looking down from a spot at the top of a high, sloping pasture at the large green valley below. Through a line of trees at the bottom of the pasture you can glimpse a lower pasture to your left and forest to your right. Beyond that is the large flattish valley, mostly wooded with strips of green fields and a few buildings visible. Beyond that is a forested mountain range rising hundreds of feet above the valley. Several rounded peaks are visible.

The valley is covered with farm fields and pastures, farm buildings and patches of forest. Some of the small hills are wooded. The air is relatively clear for summer, you can see for miles. July 23, 1983: The trail route was rather weird today. It began with a healthy climb out of the Schuylkill Valley. Then, the AT dropped back down off the ridge crest to pass by a spring located a good distance down the side of the mountain.
