Base #malt is an essential ingredient for ale/beer, providing the fermentable malt sugars in the mash tun. This piece on base malt explains so much about the skills of the modern maltster and, yes, I learned a lot from reading it even though I've been studying malt and malting for ages. Excellent!

We wrote the article (link above) on the importance of grain being malted to try and spark a discussion of the old 'bread or beer' hypothesis. Because there's no beer without #malt & malt sugars. We reckon that making malt sugars had to be discovered before any sort of #ale or #beer could be made. 🏺

I reckon if I'd realised, all those years ago, how many folk find the malting and brewing processes mysterious, mystical and inexplicable then I wouldn't have chosen it as a subject for research and writing.
