Avengers: Beyond grew out of a clever gimmick but ended up as a real showcase for the talents of writer Derek Landy who had the confidence to tell a neat Beyonder story. This is also my favorite Greg Land art in some time as it fit the aesthetic.

I really dig the colors from Romulo Fajardo Jr. on Warlock: Rebirth as I’m always a fan of Ron Lim on art but this complements the retro vibe with a modern sheen. Ron Marz’s story ping pongs between lighthearted and dramatic. It’s a fun ride!

Wanda Maximoff obviously has massive character potential, but has been haunted by story choices stretching back decades. I like that Steve Orlando’s take on Scarlet Witch mostly steers around the obstacles without discarding them entirely.

Phil Urich’s evolution as a bad guy was always hit or miss back in the day, but I like what Alex Paknadel is trying to do with hierarchy and invention in Red Goblin. That also encompasses the fact that Normie Osborn is incredibly compelling as a protagonist.

Moon Knight No. 25 earns every bit of its towering 81 pages with Jed MacKay celebrating the tremendous work he’s done on this book and continuing to build a vast mythology. Alessandro Cappucio’s art on the primary sequence is beautiful.

Miles Morales has been a tremendous beneficiary of some wonderful creative stewards within and beyond comics over his relatively short life, but I truly think Cody Ziglar, Federico Vicentini and Bryan Valenza are up there among the best.

Loki No. 2 is Dan Watters, a superb writer, infusing vibrant mythology into a sci fi super hero (?) comic quite nicely. The story is both charged and fun. I love German Peralta’s art and they’re a great fit for this particular book.

Jed MacKay is truly having a moment as perhaps the most capable and entertaining writer in super hero comics. Doctor Strange is another example of his appreciation when it comes to the vast tapestry of Marvel. Pasqual Ferry is a modern master and Heather Moore’s colors add so much.

Ann Nocenti captures the headstrong charm of Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel: Dark Tempest while also working in the relevant social commentary I consider a hallmark of her best work. Paolo Villanelli is terrific on art but the crisp colors of Java Tartaglia really transform the story.

Ann Nocenti is the perfect veteran voice for a retro Storm series as her devil may care tone captures the outsize dramatic fun of Chris Claremont’s classic Ororo. Likewise, Sid Kotian’s unique art really fits this assignment.

For Warlock: Rebirth, the creative team of Ron Marz, Ron Lim, et al. have the complex task of taking a character born of 70s aesthetics but recapturing his moment 20 years later. I think they succeed particularly on art with hitting the nostalgia marks without being outdated.

Silver Surfer: Ghost Light was a neat exercise in comic book storytelling by plucking a small but classic moment from history and expanding it out to thoughtful little epic. Huge credit to whoever in editorial came up with this as well as John Jennings for a beautiful tale.

Phil Noto is one of the finest artists working in comics, but while his line work and storytelling on Daredevil & Echo meet the usual high standards, that he does incredible colors as well really completes the package. Taboo and B. Earl craft a balanced and elaborate tale.

In his wonderful Hellcat mini-series, writer Christopher Cantwell has done a remarkable job of creating a story steeped in the lore of Patsy Walker that’s also a springboard into something much more. The art from Alex Lins and KJ Diaz alternates playful and just stunning.

Danny Ketch: Ghost Rider is on the lower end of these Marvel retro books, but it’s a compelling case for why this character shouldn’t be consigned to limbo. These are also a nice chance to see if newer artists can rise to classic storytelling and Daniel Picciotto passes the test.

I’m not familiar with Francesco Mortarino but really like his work on Cult of Carnage: Misery—very solid storytelling with some neat experimental layouts. On the story side, Sabir Pirzada takes a tenured but historically shallow character in Liz Allan and adds considerable depth.
