Here's How Much It Costs To Make Every Major US Coin - Money Digest Coins aren't necessarily worth their face value, with some worth more than their cost of production and the penny famously worth less.

The US finally went through with discontinuing the penny. Pennies are still legal tender, but stores can choose to go penniless.

"It now costs about 13.8 cents to produce a nickel, far surpassing its face value of 5 cents. And it's likely to move up."
