Though in all honestly it was a much cheaper building when it was bought many years ago. The same goes for Wolfland Bank and Magnum Opus, very old buildings which rarely ever change hands. Their local tax bill is worked out in proportion to their purchase price, not their market value. Modern wooden homes have a life expectancy of fifty years, and that means that people anticipate that they will move home at least three or four times in the lives. It also means that fire safety is of major importance and that’s why there are so many water towers and Sentinellas across the city. “This is so complicated,” says KristalClear, “and why is council tax so expensive?” “It’s not complicated,” says Mrs Wood, “this is a vast simplification of the system they had before The Decimation in 2162. And things have to be paid for. We all learnt that at school! Wolfland rules, if you want something you have to pay for it. WIP extract book 2 of 6 SlenderWolf In With the In Crowd Chapter 4 A Long Overdue Explanation “Well, aren’t you going to invite me in?” she asks. In truth, there are too many firsts coming thick and fast, and HayWire is struggling to handle all the new inputs. “Yes, of course, please, do come in. I would have asked sooner, but I’m not used to having guests call round. Come in, have a seat, would you like a tea or something?” There’s a tiny table and two simple wooden dining chairs just in front of a built in kitchenette. Sitting on opposite sides of the table, they both share awkward smiles again. Conning is cautiously trying to look around, she’s heard about studio flats but has never actually seen one before. What she’s particularly focused on is how few personal belongings there are. A nice small alarm clock, on the bedside table, a simple canvas knapsack haphazardly chucked onto the bed, a pair of Espadrilles pushed partially beneath the chest of drawers, and a used mug and teaspoon sitting on the draining board. Realising that HayWire is in stockinged feet, Conning discreetly slips off her loafers and uses her feet to carefully manoeuvre them, positioning them by the door.
