Jacks Peak County Park on Skyline Trail looking towards Carmel Valley. Dry bushes lead into redwood and oak-covered mountains with a blue sky and rolling white clouds. By Denica De Foy
A chair carved out of a tree stump on the trail in Jacks Peak Park. There is poison oak and pine trees around the path.
A sign on the trail that says "MONTEREY BAY: A Glimpse into the Ancient Past. For millions of years, Monterey County was covered by vast seas. During the Miocene Epoch, about 12 million years ago, the seas began to recede and a small island appeared. Jacks Peak is the tip of that island and the ancient seashore in the outcropping of aguajito shale that you see here. If you look closely you can see prehistoric leaves, marine crustaceans, fish and shells.
The ancient island coast aguajito shale. It is white and cream chalky rock.
