Territorial Coordination #DecidiamoNOI
The many promises made by successive administrations have not translated into concrete solutions. That's why we believe that only a horizontal and coordinated network of associations, committees, movements, and individual citizens can defend common goods such as the environment, health, and our very lives, outside of any party instrumentalization.
Today, we are taking this communication action in solidarity with associations and residents of this attacked territory and to reopen a concrete debate in the city. For us, it's essential that associations unite in information campaigns, collective meetings, demonstrations, and sit-ins. In a historical phase where numerous studies converge that there is not much time left to reverse the course leading us towards the abyss of strong climate change, we affirm the need to weave a web of new relationships that start from the bottom, capable of impacting our future and that of our children.
As a first step, we believe it's essential to request, together, the immediate opening of a permanent environmental table and the adoption of the climate emergency declaration in the Municipality of Rende.
We will follow this first claim with a series of public initiatives in the coming months, aiming to put the need to start the safety and remediation works of the Legnochimica site back at the center of the city's political debate. We will also request a radical remodeling of the integrated waste and water cycle in a public and participatory key, so that no profit or speculation can be perpetrated against our children and the entire community.

The activity of Legnochimica, in the industrial area of Rende, began in 1969 with the production of wood fiber panels and tannin. In 2002, all activities stopped, and in 2006, Legnochimica was put into liquidation, leaving behind 33 years of activity, unemployment, and pollution.
The waters saturated with chemical elements mixed with wood processing waste were never disposed of according to environmental and health protection criteria. Instead, they were collected over time in artificial basins dug into the ground. These "lakes" have caused an environmental disaster over the years, affecting groundwater and watercourses, including the Crati river. No one has been held responsible or forced to take remedial action. The same property responsible for the pollution, the group led by the Battaglia family, still has open and fully operational facilities in the Industrial Zone.
We survived the passion of www.silvateam.com/en/search?ke... The factory’s activity #Legnochimica later abandonment caused severe environmental damage, leading to respiratory illnesses, cancers, and neurological disorders.
