I love these ornate Victorian-style cast iron benches as there's just so much going on. This particular example is in Fountain Gardens in Paisley, but you can also find them in the Kibble Palace in the Botanic Gardens in Glasgow.

This is a particularly impressive surviving example, and most are much more simple affairs. While I couldn't find a foundry mark on it, it seems like the type of monument the Sun Foundry would have produced.

Many were produced by George Smith's Sun Foundry in the Port Dundas area of the city, and he held several patents for cast-iron grave markers. While they never seemed to quite take off in the way Smith intended, many still exist.

Cast iron gravemarkers, like this one in Sighthill Cemetery in Glasgow, were created towards the end of the Victorian era with the aim of making the type of highly ornamented gravestone previously only available to the very rich much more affordable.

An access panel in the Broomhill area of Glasgow produced by the Lion Foundry in Kirkintilloch. This foundry was established in the early 1880s by a number of former employees of Walter MacFarlane's Saracen Foundry in the north of Glasgow.

Photograph of a courtyard gate, absolutely typical of early 20th century Athens, vertical spear-topped metal shafts, joined by diagonals with curlicues and ornamented with more spirals above, the doorframe crowned with a rising pattern of symmetrical spirals topped by another spear. The lower part of the door has been fitted with a metal panel for privacy, indented on top to echo the original ironwork. In this case, it's a firm of plumbers, brassfounders and gasfitters established by Archibald Watson in 1833 which went on to become one of the best known plumbing and gas-fitting firms of its age and was based at 86 George Street.
