Schematic diagrams showing Cd isotopic fractionation in seep carbonates dominated by variable carbonate mineral that formed in various methane seeps. Arg, HMC, and Dol represent carbonate samples that are dominated by aragonite, high Mg-calcite, and dolomite, respectively. Cdsw and Cdpw represent the bottom seawater and pore-water pool derived Cd, respectively. SMTZ: sulfate-methane transition zone. Ex, Carb, Fesingle bondMn oxide, and Sul represent the exchangeable, carbonate, Fesingle bondMn oxide, and sulfide phases sequentially extracted from the bulk rocks, respectively.
#WeekendReading: Zhong et al. on Cadmium isotope systematics in seep carbonates. Looks like it tracks seawater in calcite and aragonite, but the pore fluids in dolomite. Not surprising, but potentially useful! 🧪⚒️

Arcsin Mielke (M) scores between emulated temperature from the E11111 simulation and that from individual simulations following the linear-sum/shared interaction factorization of Lunt et al. (2021), averaging over all 120 pathways for each driving component: a) atmospheric common dioxide (CO2); b) Obliquity; c) Eccentricity; d) Precession; e) Ice; f) Global means, expressed as a percentage. M scores, in short, are the quantitative metric used here to assess the goodness of fit, in this case between the simulation with all forcings included and those from each of the driving components. M scores represent the mean square error non-dimensionalised by the variance; a score of 1000 is a perfect match, whereas a score of 0 or negative values indicate no skill. Note that the sum of (a-e) is by definition equal to 1000 (See Methods for more details).

Comparison of the photogeological map, modified from Stack et al. (2020) (Panel a), and spectra classified by the HM4 model from CRISM image HRL000040FF (Panel b), which the model was not trained on. Mineralogical predictions were filtered to remove pixels where the model was less than 75% confident in the predicted mineralogy, and a minimum of 10 connected component size, following Plebani et al. (2022b). Panel (c) shows the prediction confidence per pixel.

Beneath a stormy sky, a row of Viking-style ships sail on a rough sea. In the foreground is historical fiction novel Peril & Plunder. The cover features the same Viking-style boats on the storm sea with a couple in the foreground - a blonde woman in a long green and white medieval dress and a long-haired man in a mail shirt, holding a shield in one hand and his sword in the other. The heading reads: An epic voyage continues. The text says: Led by Siward of Gloucester, the Anglo-Saxons have fled England. But can they escape the ghosts of the past? Can they even escape the Normans? https://mybook.to/PerilandPlunder
